National Fishing Week #1

With over 1 million lakes, rivers and streams plus three oceans, Canada is a fisherman’s dream.   Saturday through July 10th is National Fishing Week, when Canadians are encouraged to grab a rod and reel and head out to their local rivers and lakes.

If you’re in need of some fishing tips, check out the Catch Fishing booklet from the Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation. National Fishing Week has been celebrated in Canada since 2000.

 

MBCI Grad Today

Today’s the special day for Grade 12 students at MBCI. The seniors of MBCI are graduating and will have the opportunity to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas. Grad will begin at 1pm at the MBCI Gym. This year 74 graduates will be walking across the stage receiving their diplomas. 

 

Federal Government on Summer Break

Churchill Keewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton and the federal government are on their summer break. Ashton stopped by 102.9 CJAR to talk about pushing the Liberal government for action.

Ashton will spend the next few months touring our riding getting feedback from each community. Parliament will reconvene in the fall in Ottawa.

 

Curbside Recycling Pickup New To The Pas

As of next week in The Pas, recycling will now be picked up curbside. The Pas and Area Recycling Centre Board of Directors made the announcement yesterday that starting on Monday all recycling will be picked up at the curb. They will be following The Pas’ garbage schedule and recycling must be placed in clear or transparent bags, or in a blue box. Cardboard, electronics and batteries must all be broken down and separated from the other recycling materials.  

 

Canada Day Festivities

Canada Day festivities are this weekend in The Pas. The annual holiday will be celebrated over 2 days this year. Terry Mckellep from The Pas Community renewal Corporation talks about some of the events happening Thursday before the fireworks at Devon Park.

On Friday the parade begins at 12:30 at Devon Park, it will end at the Opasquia Ag Society this year.

 

COPP Celebrating 25 Years

The Citizens on Patrol Program are celebrating 25 years of service in Manitoba this year. In The Pas it’s year 23 and Elsie Reid the local Co-ordinator of COPP explains how much work goes into the program.

COPP is a program that works in assistance with the RCMP. COPP members are out patrolling every day, they do things from speed watch, to seat belt and cell phone surveys, to security and traffic control for community events.

 

Clearwater Lake Marathon

July 17th is the annual Clearwater Lake marathon this year. The marathon is held every year to challenge yourself and increase your physical activity. All pledges will go towards rotary kids with cancer. Pledges of over 50-dollars will be entered for a chance to win two calm air flight tickets. A pancake breakfast will be held before the marathon with awards and prizes to follow. It will be held at the Clearwater Lake Hall by the airport and to register visit runningroom.orgmraweb.ca or clearwatercottagers.ca 

 

Postal Union Lockout Could Affect Your Mail

A potential labour disruption at Canada Post is on the horizon.

Over 50,000 postal employees have been without a contract since January.

A lockout would affect mail and parcel delivery across the country greatly. A date for a potential lockout has been set for July 2nd.

In the meantime, in advance of a possible labour disruption, the province is making government cheques and essential mail available for pickup.

TPCRC AGM Tonight

Tonight the annual general meeting for The Pas Community Renewal Corporation will be held. They will be talking about the previous year, as well as the upcoming year’s plans and projects. There will be a bbq and door prizes, the meeting is open to the public and will be held at 5pm at 1559 Gordon Avenue. Chuck Davidson Spoke to The Pas Chamber

The Pas and District Chamber of Commerce had a special guest speaker yesterday. Chuck Davidson the President and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce spoke on the importance and influence of the chamber network. He talks about the two biggest challenges communities and businesses face, a work force issue and creating a competitive business climate.  Davidson also spoke on the need for a northern development strategy. He said don’t just expect a northern strategy be done, make sure that things that are important are heard.

 

 

 

National Aboriginal Day Yesterday

It’s a busy week on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Yesterday OCN celebrated national aboriginal day with events. Edwin Jebb an OCN Councilor has more on the signing of the Proclamation of OCN environmental Laws. OCN is the first, first nation in Canada to sign a proclamation of Environmental laws.

 

 

 

Chuck Davidson to Speak at Chamber of Commerce Meeting

The Pas and District Chamber of Commerce will has a special guest speaker tomorrow. Chuck Davidson the President and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce will be in town to speak. He will be speaking on the importance and influence of the chamber network and will be touring our area seeing the diverse business and industries. Relay for Life

This weekend the annual Relay for Life was held in The Pas. The first time event to The Pas was a success and Kellie Graveline, the coordinator of the relay is already looking forward to future years. This year they had over 100 people participate in the Relay and raised over 6-thousand dollars.

 

Dog Bite Prevention

As you’re out and about this summer, you’ll likely see more dogs and their owners out as well.   In order to minimize the chance of being on the receiving end of a dog bite, you should be aware of why a dog might bite in the first place.  Research shows that over half-a-million dog bites occur in Canada every year.   For more on dog bite prevention, listen to Thompson Today at 12:40 and 5:10 this afternoon. 

 

 

OEA Employment and Training Sponsorship Applications

The Opaskwayak Education Authority, Employment and Training, are taking applications for Vocational Sponsorships. Applications must include a copy of latest transcripts, treaty card, social insurance number and acceptance letter for vocational institution. Applications can be picked up at the Employment and Training office upstairs of the UCN Youth Centre. For more information you can contact Annie Wilson at 204-627-7181.  

 

Firearms Association Spring Shoot

This weekend you can try your hand at a new group. The Pas Firearms Association is hosting their annual Spring Shoot and its open to anyone 12 years old and over. No membership is required and it will be held on Sunday. Registration is at 12:30 with the shoot to be held from 1 to 4pm. The Spring Shoot will take place at the Clearwater lake turnoff on Hwy 10. Community Wellness Challenge Wrap Up

The 6 week community wellness challenge wrapped up a few weeks ago in The Pas. Russell Thorne the Regional Community Health Developer for the Northern Health Region has more on how the challenge worked.

Thorne says the benefit from the challenge is the lasting results, improvements in energy levels, and possibly a loss in weight. Over 290 people participated in the challenge this year, which is up from 250 in 2015, and 65 in 2014.

 

 

 

Swan River Pedestrian Killed

An 82-year old Swan River woman has died after being hit by a vehicle. On Monday at approximately 5pm the 82-year old woman was walking through a cross walk at an intersection when she was hit. Investigation reveals that a 17-year-old female driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, stopped at a stop sign and then proceeded to turn striking the woman. The 82-year old swan river woman was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. A traffic analyst is assisting in the investigation.

 

Changes Made to Plastic Bag By Law

Confusion to the new plastic bag by law prompted Town Council to make changes this week. At Monday’s council meeting, council passed by a vote of 7 to nothing, changes to the wording of the by law. Businesses with Biodegradable bags will have until the end of the year to use up their supply.

 

Clearwater Lake Marathon Early Bird Deadline

Tomorrow is the final day of early bird registration for the Clearwater Lake marathon. The Marathon will take place July 17th as a fundraiser for Rotary Kids with Cancer. Those interested in taking part in the annual marathon can register at runningroom.com,mraweb.ca, or Clearwatercottagers.ca. Marathon day will include prizes, a draw for calm air flight tickets, a pancake breakfast and beer gardens.

 

Community Clean Up

Residents of The Pas and The Pas Community renewal Corporation got together this weekend for a community cleanup. Every year the TPCRC hosts a community clean up and this weekend’s was a big success. In total, over 480 kilograms of garbage and 212 kilograms of recycling were cleaned up off our streets. Close to 50 volunteers spent the day Saturday cleaning up garbage and recycling around The Pas. The goal of the cleanup is to get as much garbage and recycling off our streets in time for the summer months. 

 

The Pas Hiring Energy Advocate

Town of The Pas is hiring for a new position. The position of Energy Advocate is a new, full year, 2 year term the town is looking to fill. Responsibilities of the Energy Advocate include, promote and market energy efficiency and conservation within The Pas as it relates to the Community Energy Plan. Coordinate and carry out outreach to homeowners and local businesses to deliver the message of energy efficiency to the community, and coordinate planned activities with contractors and customers. The position will remain open until filled and applications can be sent to Keri Lee Zaharia, Human Resource Officer, at keriz@townofthepas.ca.

 

Carlson to Take Over as Kinsmen President

As the Kinsmen Club of The Pas’s year comes to an end a new president has been named starting July 1st. Danny Halpin’s year as president is coming to an end and Kevin Carlson will be taking over. Kevin talked about the upcoming events for the club including the July 1st Canada Day Events, Drive One for your community activities, October Fest, and Christmas Tree sales.

Community Clean Up

Tomorrow is your chance to help clean up the community ahead of Summer. The Pas Community Renewal Corporation is hosting their annual community clean up. Every year the TPCRC and a few local businesses will team up with residents of The Pas to beautify our community. Everyone will meet and begin at the legion and there will be free hot dogs and water to follow for participants. It starts at 11am and ends at 2pm. Kids of Steel Triathlon Wrap Up

This weekend athletes from The Pas took part in a triathlon to showcase their skills. The Pas Rec and Wellness Kids of Steel Triathlon was Saturday and 63 people took part. It was a big success as they had lots of volunteers helping out and athletes got to swim, bike and run their way to success.

 

Book Launch

UCN will be hosting a book launch tonight in The Pas. Author Sue Matheson’s will be releasing her new novel, The Westerns and War Films of John Ford. She will be in attendance at the UCN Library starting at 7pm to sign copies. Everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.

 

Manitoba NDP says Pallister ignores the North

Manitoba New Democrats are keeping the provincial government accountable to its promises. The Pas MLA Amanda Lathlin said this week “Investments in the North are investments in hope, especially for our Northern youth.” The Manitoba NDP said on April 13thPallister committed to launching Yes North within the first 100 days in office, but last week’s budget had no mention of the initiative. The Manitoba NDP wants to see the program launched within the remaining 63 days and a commitment to future investments in infrastructure education and health.  Lathlin continued by saying she has her work cut out for her in advocating for the North, where Manitoba’s heart beats.

 

Drive One for MBCI Grads

Northland Ford and the MBCI Grad class will be teaming up for a grad fundraiser. Northland Ford and Ford of Canada have hosted Drive One for Your Community Fundraisers in the past and have been able to bring in thousands of outside dollars for local groups. For every person that takes a test drive this Saturday at MBCI, Ford of Canada will donate 20 dollars to the 2016 Grad Class. Donations from Ford of Canada are to a maximum of 6-thousand dollars and there will also be a BBQ and canteen.

 

          

May Crime Stats

The RCMP Monthly Crime Stats were released yesterday. In the Town of The Pas in May RCMP responded to 18 incidents of Assault, 8 of Break and Enter and 1 of Drugs. Drug and Assault numbers decreased from April while Break and Enter rose slightly. In the RM of Kelsey, RCMP responded to 4 incidents of Assault, 0 of Break and enter and 3 of Drugs. Assault and Break and Enter numbers dropped while drugs rose month over month.  

 

MS Walk Wrap Up

The Multiple Sclerosis Walk was a big success in The Pas once again this year. Although the number of walkers has decreased from previous years donations continue to pour in. This year approximately 50 walkers took part raising over 13-thousand dollars. The walker that contributed the most money was Robert Jackson bringing in 8-thousand dollars.  It was also confirmed from the Winnipeg office that Robert has raised over 100-thousand dollars to date, a huge accomplishment.

 

 

 

 

OCN Businesses Pay Respect

Business across OCN will be closed this afternoon out of respect. Joe A Ross School, Oscar Lathlin Collegiate, the OEA Administration Office, Employment and Training Office and the Jake Constant Bus Facility will all be closed out of respect for the late Arnold Constant. The Opaskwayak Education Authority Board of Directors has requested the closer starting at noon. They thank everyone for your understanding.

6 week Wellness Challenge Celebration

6 weeks has finally come to an end and the community wellness challenge will be celebrating tomorrow. The 6 week community wellness challenge celebration is set for tomorrow night at 7pm in the Roy H Johnston arena. They invite everyone to attend as they will be coming together to celebrate the completion of the challenge and their goal of good health. They anticipate a lot of attendees as they had 290 people participate in the wellness challenge. Along with the general prizes they will be drawing for the grand prize and a special category prize as well.  

 

Camp Day Wrap Up

Tim Horton’s annual camp day was held across Canada on Wednesday. In The Pas our Tim Horton’s has been able to send 2 youth to camp each year thanks to donations and coffee purchases. Since our Tim Horton’s started camp day they’ve been able to send 24 youth over the past 12 years. In total yesterday our Tim Hortons raised over 48-hundred dollars. Over 38-hundred came from coffee sales, 700 from Camp Day bracelet purchases and 200 from donations. This year was the 25th annual Camp Day across Canada.

 

High School Student Needing Local Support

A local high school girl is in need of community help after an accident in the United States. Alyssa Kennedy a high school student at MBCI fell on a playground in Northern California shattering her kidney on May 22nd. Her mother Amy Bradt has more on the mountain of bills they face.

"The families insurance only covers just over 11 thousand dollars US and they’ve set up a PlumFund page asking for donations. The total amount needed for Alyssa is unknown but will well exceed the 30-thosuand dollars the page is set up to receive."

 

Snowbirds Coming to Northern Manitoba

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds as well as the CF-18 demonstration team will take flight in Flin Flon in July. The Flin Flon Air Show will be taking place July 13th at the Flin Flon Airport. Tickets are 10 dollars in advance for adults and 5 dollars for students ages 6 to 18. Tickets are now available at the Kleen-All and Pharmasave in Flin Flon or online at www.snowbirdsflinflon.ca. The proceeds from the air show will go towards the new emergency ward at the General Hospital.  

 

2016 Kids of Steel Triathlon

Kids 8 years and older will take their chance at a triathlon this weekend. The Kids of Steel triathlon is Saturday in The Pas and it’s a chance for everyone to Swim, Bike and Run your way to success. It’s open to all kids and you can register as a team or individual. You can register at the The Pas Rec and Wellness Centre, or you can receive more information by calling them at 204-627-1134.

 

Relay for Life

Registration is open now for the Relay for Life in The Pas. The Relay will be held in The Pas on June 18th. It will take place from 5 to 11pm at the Goldie Goldstrand Track. You can register now as part of a team or individual at relayforlife.caIn 2015 alone, 196,900 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer. That means that every 3 minutes, one Canadian is diagnosed with Cancer. Whether you are cheering on survivors, walking the track, passing the baton to a teammate or joining in trackside activities, The Relay for Life is more than just a cancer walk. Every dollar raised makes a difference and goes to the Canadian Cancer society to fund cancer research.

 

Today is Camp Day at Tim Horton’s

Today is the 25th anniversary of Camp Day in Canada. Tim Hortons restaurants across the country use the fundraising day to donate 100 percent of coffee sales to the Tim Horton’s Children’s Foundation. The foundation uses the money to send kids from low income families to camp each year. In 2016 alone they will help send more than 19,000 kids to camp. Over the 25 years Camp day has raised more than 150 million dollars, sending over 237-thousand children to camp. This year along with coffee purchases and donations, you can purchase a 2 dollar Camp Day Bracelet to support Camp Day.
