Watier Jewelers Closes for Last Time

A long time business in The Pas is closing its doors this evening for the final time. Dennis Watier Owner of Watier Jewelers says it’s an emotional time for his family. Watier Jewelers first opened its doors in 1961 and is going on 57 years in our community. They will be celebrating their last day today with coffee and cupcakes.

The Pas Kinsmen BBQ Raffle

The Kinsmen Club of The Pas is hosting another major fundraiser over the next few months. The Kinsmen Club will be raffling off a $2,000 broil king BBQ. There are 3 different prizes available and for tickets you can get them from any Kinsmen member or at Northland Ford. Only 1200 tickets were printed. UCN Open House

The University College of the North will be hosting an open house in the middle of March. Anyone is invited to the open house and it’s for people who would like to learn how they can grow their future at their own pace. You can also meet with current students, instructors and staff to learn more about the variety of programs available. It will be held March 16th from 4pm to 7pm. There will also be a chance to win a two-thousand dollar tuition credit. 

Next Phase Of Look North Strategy Announced

Premier Biran Pallister and Growth, Enterprise and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen have announced the next phase of the government's "Look North" strategy.

 

Pallister explained the strategy encourages those from outside northern Manitoba to consider investing in the region.

 

It includes a website - look north M-B dot C-A - which has information on building a business in northern Manitoba.

 

It also encourages Manitobans to share their vision and love for the north by submitting short videos and photos or through social media by using the hashtag Look North M-B.

 

A plan i salso in development to engage First Nation communities with interest in increasing their participation in the economic benefits of mining.

 

Three northern economic summits will be held in The Pas, Thompson and Churchill in April.

Province to invest in UCN Science Labs

Premier Brian Pallister was on hand in The Pas yesterday to not only kick off Trappers Festival, but to announce a funding investment for UCN. Pallister talked about the relationships between different levels of government and their importance by saying "we have to work together, i'm pelase to have worked well with Mayor Jim Scott and OCN." Yesterday they announced a 1-million dollar investment in renovation of science labs at UCN. The science labs are used annually by 120 students and are expecting to be renovated by next school year.

Day 2 of Trappers is Today

Its day 2 of the Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival today. After the opening ceremonies and the torchlight parade yesterday, today is the first full day of events. Starting today at 10am is the start of the World Championship Sled Dog Race at Halcrow Lake. Later this afternoon The Snow Sculpting and Decorating contest judging begins at 2pm. Day 2 of Trappers Festival wraps up this evening with the Community Competition Night. 

Kinsmen Club Welcomes Dignitaries to Trappers Festival

This trapper’s festival the Kinsmen Club of The Pas will be welcoming National Dignitaries to the weeklong events. Every year the Kinsmen Club put in hundreds of volunteer hours into the dog sled races and this year will be no exception. Kevin Carlson, The Pas Kinsmen Club President said, “I cannot tell you just how thrilled we are to have our national president James Doerr and District Governor John DeBeer with us for trapper’s festival.”  Last year the club put in 1207 service hours to successfully run the World Championship 10 sled dog race, the Jack McPhail 6 dog race, Joe LeClerc 4 dog race and the Shell Kinsmen Junior race.

 

Three Arrested in Friday Morning Home Robbery

The Pas RCMP have apprehended 3 suspects in a Friday morning house robbery. The Pas RCMP received a report of a robbery this morning and responded. The Three suspects fled in a vehicle but we’re apprehended. RCMP Media Relations say it doesn’t appear they're any injuries and the investigation is ongoing, updates will be available as they’re provided. 

OCN Blizzard Meeting to be held in Thompson

Representatives of the OCN Blizzard are making a trip to Thompson to meet with Northern Leaders tomorrow morning. Nathan McGillivray an OCN member and one of the OCN Blizzard Founders says the OCN Blizzard Board of Directors and staff will be in attendance along with OCN members, Northern Chiefs and Northern residents. The meeting is being hosting by Chief Marcel Moody of Nelson House and other communities are expected to attend. The focus the meeting is to look for support and financial contributions from other Northern Communities and try to keep the OCN Blizzard in OCN for future years.

Voices of Chamber Members were Heard

A request from the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce has yielded positive success.  They asked Chambers across the province to write to local MPs to persuade the Trudeau government not to implement a tax on health and dental benefits which would prevent many employers from providing this coverage.  Northern Chambers sent letters to MP Niki Ashton and encouraged their members to do the same.  Manitoba Chambers President Chuck Davidson says the campaign yielded positive results. He says the Chambers across both Manitoba as well as Canada stepped up and expressed their concern about the potential impact this was going to have on small businesses. Davidson adds this has shown what can be accomplished by Chambers of Commerce when they have a common goal and message. 

KSD Budget Meeting Tonight at MBCI!

The Kelsey School Division are hosting a public meeting in regards to their 2017-18 budget year. Tonight is the night to have your voice heard or ask questions as everyone is welcome to attend the public meeting. It will be held at the MBCI Library at 7pm. It’s an opportunity to provide input regarding suggested items for the budget year. Budget items will be on display and Board members will be present to discuss them. The Preliminary Budget will be tabled on Feb 6th

Food Handling Course Offered in The Pas

You can take a food handling course here in The Pas. If you’re interesting in working in the food industry or would just like more knowledge on safe food handling the course is for you. The food safe, food handling level 1 course, will be offered Monday at the Christ Church Anglican Hall. It will run from 8:30am to 4:30pm and the instructor is James Dean.
