Treaty 10 Photo Display at the Sam Waller

It’s a busy week at the Sam Waller museum in The Pas as Next week the venue will play host to a photo exhibit featuring a selection of photos related to the 1924 treaty payment from Prince Albert to The Pas.

The Treaty 10 payment, a pivotal event in Canadian history, saw the Canadian government pay annuities to First Nations people who had signed Treaty 10.

This was part of the government's commitment to provide benefits and resources to Indigenous communities in exchange for the surrender of their lands.

In 1924, the famed novelist Sinclair Lewis and his brother Claude accompanied a Canadian Government Traty 10 payment party.

A collection of photos that Claude took that were nearly lost will be on display at the Sam Waller Museum in The Pas for one night only.

George Colpitts, a History professor at the University of Calgary, wrote a book about Sinclair Lewis.

Les Oystryk is a retired conservation officer with ties to Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Both will host the Event at the Museum, providing information and insights on the Treaty 10 Payments, the routes taken, the communities visited, and the history behind them.

The Event runs on June 26th at the Sam Waller Museum and is free to attend.

Drug Alert The Pas

On Monday, the Northern Health Region put out a drug and overdose alert for The Pas.

A street drug sample from town tested positive for medetomidine, xylazine, and fentanyl.  It was tested on May 9th by Health Canada’s Drug Analysis Service.  The sample collected was a purple powder.

Medetomidine and xylazine are both veterinary tranquillizer approved only for use on animals.

This is the first time Medetomidine has been detected in street drugs in Manitoba.

Xylazine can cause drowsiness and sedation,  and may cause the person to lose consciousness.  Naloxone does not work on either of these drugs.

Fentanyl is a well-known toxic opioid that can result in overdose causing respiratory depression, unconsciousness and death.

If you use drugs, keep an eye out for this purple powder and consider the following tips from Street Connections:

Get naloxone and overdose training before using and do not use drugs alone or behind a locked door.  Also, stagger use with friends so someone can call 911 if needed.

When the pandemic hit, the Workplace pledged to keep all its employees.

Free ADHD and Bullying Webinar

The Northern Learning and Support Center is hosting a lunch and learn webinar next Tuesday dealing with ADHD and the lifelong effects that bullying can have on children with ADHD.

Children and teens with ADHD are more likely to be bullied than their neurotypical peers.

Symptoms of ADHD can include impulsivity, trouble detecting social cues, low self-esteem, and executive function deficits.

Bullying and abuse can harm a child's brain architecture and function, leaving neurological scars, scars that are visible on brain scans

A child's brain is directly affected by environment and practice, meaning that empowering and inspiring a child can be greatly beneficial to their brain's development.

At this webinar, you'll learn ADHD Symptoms and behaviour that can make children targets, strategies to help children recover from trauma, and practical intervention skills to strengthen the brain and restore holistic health.

The Webinar is Tuesday June 11th from noon to 1pm, it is free to attend. To book a spot, email T Catalano at KSD dot MB dot CA.

Stress Management

We should all be aware of managing stress; both positive and negative life changes can lead to stress, and finding a way to cope is key.

What causes stress for some may be different for others; managing mental and physical well-being plays a big part.

Stress is brought on when the demands of a situation or event become too much to manage.

Often, this stress is caused by an overwhelming demand at work and school, managing health and relationships, and dealing with financial situations.

The Beatrice Wilson Health Center offers a wide range of support programs in education, prevention, and advocacy and more more.

Programs are voluntary and non-judgmental, and self-referrals are welcome.

The OHA does have an afterhour crisis line at 204-923-0519 and can help if you feel over-stressed and are looking for support.
