Cut for Cancer

Tonight The Pas Legion Branch number 19 is hosting the “Cut For Cancer” to raise awareness and money for The Pas Health Complex’s chemotherapy department.

 

Several community members and branch members will be saving their heads to show support.

 

Everyone is encouraged to come out to see the event and make a donation to the cause.

 

Regular meat draws will be taking place starting at 5 with the canteen open this evening, and the shave taking place at 7 pm.

Hudbay Training in The Pas

The Northern Manitoba Sector Council along with the OCN, and MCN are hosting a training session in the community for those interested in mining fundamentals.

 

The five-week training and employment program with Hudbay will be held at the Wescanna Inn in The Pas from January 13th to February 14th.

 

For those interested in participating in the program, the registration deadline, December 2nd, is only a  few days away.

 

The program aims to train candidates for possible positions with Hudbay.

Northern Manitoba's mining sector is on the rise and home to 29 critical minerals, with mines open in Thompson, Flin Flon, Lynn Lake, Snow Lake, and Norway House, producing Gold, Nickel Lithium, and more.

Highway 283 Fire

On Tuesday Morning The Pas Fire Department was called to help with a fire at an intersection on Highway 283 and 282 towards the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border.

 

When the department arrived on scene they found that a fire had broken out near the rear right wheel of a tractor-trailer.

 

The fire blocked traffic heading both ways for several hours before being cleared.

 

The Pas Fire Department along with Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure stayed on scene until approximately 11 am.

TPCRC Santa Claus Parade

The Santa Claus Parade is coming soon, on Saturday, December 7th, starting at 5:30.

 

This year's theme is "Unwrap the Magic of Christmas."

 

The parade will start at the GLMC and end at the Roy H Johnston.

 

A skate with Santa will take place at the Roy H Johnston from 3:30 to 5 and ahead of the parade the library will have activities and games for the kids set up at a booth at the arena.

 

There will be hot dogs and hot chocolate for everyone who attends.

 

The parade route can be found online at tpcrc.ca and registration can be done there as well.

TPCRC be a Santa to a Senior

The Pas Community Renewal Corporation is once again hosting “Be a Santa to a Senior”, a program aimed at bringing Christmas Joy to those that need it most during the season.

 

The TPCRC will have a display set up at this year’s Festival OF Trees coming up on December 7th and they are encouraging you to pick an ornament from their tree and purchase a gift for a senior in the community.

 

The Ornaments contain all the information on how the program works, gift suggestions, and how to donate to the program.

 

Ornaments can also be found online and the deadline to submit a donation or gift for the program is December 12th.

 

Gifts can be dropped off at the TPCRC offices on Edwards Avenue.

Operation Red Nose The Pas

Operation Red Nose kicks off in The Pas this weekend and there still is lots of time to volunteer.

 

Teams of 3 are needed to drive everyone home safely over the next few weeks.

 

The program that first started in the 80s relies on volunteers to get those who have had too much to drink home over the holidays.

 

Donations are not required but are encouraged; all money raised will go to support the Road Runners Swim Club locally.

 

All volunteers will also enter a draw for a 1000-dollar Calm Air gift certificate.

 

Operation Red Nose starts this weekend and will be running from 9 pm to 2 am over the next few weeks and on New Year's Eve.

Chamber Update

The Pas and OCN Chamber of Commerce was proud to bring back the Citizen and Business of the Year awards to the community.

 

Loraine Packo and the Lions Dish were given the awards at a ceremony last week.

 

The presentation took place following the annual general meeting.

 

Some of the plans for the upcoming year involve monthly lunch and learn sessions; this will include presentations from a community safety group, tax planning, succession planning and a wide array of topics to engage the community.

 

Planning is also already underway for the annual trade show in the spring with plans to ramp up the event and bring in more activities and vendors.

Town of The Pas Update

Following last week’s council meeting town of The Pas Mayor Andre Murphy provided an update.

 

The town of The Pas is investigating short-term rentals and airBNBs to ensure that processes are in place to govern them in the community.

 

This was one of the subjects discussed at last week’s council meeting along with grant funding for a new landfill and park upgrades.

 

The town is putting up Christmas lights along Fischer Avenue this week, and signs will be up to prevent parking in the work area.

 

Snow removal routes are now in effect during the winter, and residents are asked not to park along affected streets that include First, Second, Third, Fischer, and Cathedral.

 

The community safety officers have completed training over the last 4 weeks and are now fully trained by the province of Manitoba.

 

The town has also introduced a youth councillor.

 

The next council, meeting will take place at the council chamber on Tuesday, November 26th.

Shamattawa Drug Seizure

On Sunday as a result of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking Kisematawa First Nation, Shamattawa RCMP conducted a search at a residence on Bear Avenue.

 

The search led to officers seizing cocaine, oxycodone, alprazolam, numerous other illicit pills and over 40,000 dollars.

 

The investigation also led to the arrest of three individuals, a 23-year-old male and two females, ages 39 and 30, from the community, who remain in police custody.

 

Investigations are ongoing.

Smile Cookies The Pas

Tim Hortons' Smile Cookie Week is an annual fundraising initiative that typically takes place in September.

 

Last year Tim Hortons also started a Holiday Smile Cookies raising over 9 million dollars across the country.

 

This week, Tim Hortons is selling Holiday Smile Cookies, with proceeds going to support local charities and send local children to Tim Hortons Camps.

 

Donations in The Pas and OCN will go towards the OCN and Big Eddy Youth Centers, which help provide programming and events for youth in the community.

 

Applications are already being accepted for local charities and organizations to apply to be part of the fundraiser and are due before the end of the year.

Burning Permits The Pas

The Town of the Pas passed a new by-law at last week’s council meeting requiring residents to obtain open-air fire permits.

 

Permits will be required to operate a fire pit within the town.

 

Fire pits must be enclosed with a screen or gate and be made of non-combustible materials and be located at least 3 meters from buildings or other combustible materials.

 

Only clean dry wood, charcoal or briquettes can be burned.

 

Rubbish, garbage, garden, and yard waste are not permitted to burn.

 

If complaints are made in regard to smoke, fires must be extinguished immediately, and The Pas Fire Service reserves the right to check on installations to ensure safety.

 

Currently, permits are free as administrators are currently updating the fee schedule which requires the council’s approval, once approved the fee is expected to be low.

 

Permits are good for as long as you live at your current residence but will have to be replaced if you move within town.

 

Permits can be picked up at the town offices or by emailing firechief@townofthepas.ca.

Thompson RCMP

On Saturday, November 2nd, RCMP in Thompson received a call for assistance at a residence on Ashberry Place.

 

When officers arrived a loud disturbance could be heard within the unit.

 

Upon entry, officers learned that 2 adult females, ages 26 and 41, were arguing after the 26-year-old had dropped a 5-month-old infant multiple times.

 

Officers located the child hidden in an entertainment unit, EMS were called to the scene and transported the infant with non-life-threatening injuries to the hospital.

 

Upon being released the infant was taken into care by a relative.

 

The 26-year-old female, from Thompson, was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life.

 

She was later released from police custody with a court appearance.

 

Investigations are ongoing.

Operation Christmas Child The Pas

Since its launch in 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered millions of shoeboxes in more than 150 countries, making it one of the biggest Christmas projects worldwide.

 

It's noted that most boxes received are for 5 to 9-year-old girls, and the fewest received were for 2 to 4-year-old and 10 to 14-year-old boys.

 

Any standard shoe box can be used, but boxes can also be picked up at The Pas Regional Library and the Northern Lights Dollar Store.

 

Boxes in the community are due at The Pas Alliance Church this Sunday; collections will take place from 1:30 to 3:30.

Thompson RCMP Update

Last Friday Thompson RCMP received a report of a suspicious individual in a home on Tataskweyak Cree Nation.

 

Information reported indicated that the suspect was armed,

The property was surrounded, and officers instructed all occupants to exit the premises at which point a 32-year-old male complied and was arrested without incident.

 

Believing there were still individuals in the home officers entered and found 2 males locked behind a door who were both arrested without further incident.

 

Upon entry to the locked room, officers found a large quantity of cash and drugs.

 

A search warrant was drafted and executed and 25 thousand dollars, a large knife, baton, and drug paraphernalia were located.

 

32-year-old Melvin Beardy, from Tataskweyak Cree Nation, 25-year-old Anthony Runsewe, from Brampton, Ontario, and a 16-year-old male, from Winnipeg, were remanded into custody on multiple charges.

 

Thompson RCMP is continuing to investigate.

Norway House RCMP Update

Early Tuesday Morning at 7:30 am Norway House RCMP were called to help at a residence in the community.

 

Inside officers located a 23-year-old female, the cause of death has been deemed suspicious.

 

RCMP Major Crime Services has taken over the investigation.

 

Investigations are ongoing.

Peace of Mind Seminar

Finding peace of mind when someone you love passes can be difficult especially if it’s something you have never navigated before.

 

That’s why a funeral planning seminar is taking place in the Pas this weekend to help provide all the necessities you need when it happens.

 

Finances and banking, pre-arrangements, power of attorney, and final wishes are all topics that will be discussed.

 

The free seminar will take place this Saturday at the Metis Hall from 10:30 to 2:30 in the afternoon.

World Diabetes Day The Pas

World Diabetes Day is coming up this Thursday.

 

It's the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, the inventor of insulin.

 

The Northern Health Region aims to raise awareness about Diabetes, and its impact on Northern communities with a Lunch and Learn, yoga, and sleep mental wellness and diabetes education bingo taking place at the Beatrice Wilson Health Center.

 

The Lunch and Learn runs from 12:15 to 1 pm, yoga from 5 to 6 pm, and the bingo starts at 6:30, all running at the Beatrice Wilson Health Center.

 

The day highlights the importance of prevention, management, and access to quality healthcare for those affected by diabetes which is extremely high in Canada and the Indigenous population.

 

The theme for this year’s World Diabetes Day is diabetes and mental wellness; learn more at worlddiabetesday.org.

Guest List Inc Dinner

The Pas Guest List Inc. is hosting a near-sold-out event this weekend.

 

The fundraiser is part of the walking path project.

 

The Guest List does have a goal to place two murals a year along the path.

 

The Next mural planned will be done in spring with an Artist named Nereo Zorro from Winnipeg.

 

The Guest List is planning another trivia night in December and more fundraising dinners in the spring.

Assault in Thompson

RCMP in Thompson was notified of a male victim at the hospital last Tuesday night with serious injuries.

 

When they responded it was determined that the victim, 64-year-old Melvin Anderson had been found the night before in front of a residence on Martin Bay after it was reported by a family member.

 

Due to the severity of the victim’s wounds, he was transferred to a hospital in Winnipeg, and his condition has since improved.

Giving Week

The Tri-Community Foundation's long-term goal is to improve the quality of life for future generations in The Pas, OCN, and RM on Kelsey.

 

Starting Monday, Giving Week will take place across the province; all Donations made to community foundations will be matched by the Province of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Foundation.

 

This will help build capacity in the future for the youngest foundation in the province situated in the Tri-Community.

Chamber Update

The Pas and OCN Chamber of Commerce is bringing back the business and citizen of the year after a hiatus last year.

 

For the Business of the Year Award, the Chamber is looking for a business that contributes to the local economy and creates jobs, those that prioritize community engagement and sustainability, excellent service, innovation, and ethics.

Applications are open until November 14th, winners will be announced following the Chambers's next AGM on Thursday, November 21st at the Wescanna Inn at 6 pm.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is a project by Samaritan's Purse that encourages people to fill shoeboxes with gifts and essential items for children in need worldwide.

 

Items can include toys, school supplies, and hygiene products.

 

The initiative started in 1990, and distributes millions of shoeboxes annually, delivering joy during the holiday season while also sharing a message of hope and love.

 

Follow-up ministry programs are offered to share the Gospel with children and their families.

 

Shoe boxes in The Pas can be picked up at The Pas Alliance Church and The Pas Regional Library. The collection will be done at The Pas Alliance Church on November 17th from 2 to 4 p.m.

RCMP in Swan River

Last Friday RCMP in Swan River reported to an unresponsive male in the legion parking lot in Swan River.

 

When officers arrived they found that the 21-year-old male had sustained serious injuries, he was pronounced dead on scene.

 

His death is being investigated as a homicide.

 

RCMP in Swan River are looking for anyone who may have witnessed the event or may have information as to what took place.

Mining Strategy in Manitoba

The Manitoba Governments new critical mineral strategy looks to open an office that works with indigenous peoples, and businesses to work through the permitting process.

 

The province says the new strategy will develop a revenue-sharing model that will collaborate with indigenous nations.

 

Mining Association of Manitoba co-director John Morris outlined the process yesterday during the Central Canada Mineral Exploration Convention in Winnipeg.

 

The convention will run again today and presents significant opportunities for the mining industry in Manitoba.

 

The event is being funded in part by Vale Manitoba and Prairies Economic Development Canada.

Fraud In The Province

There has been an issue province-wide with seniors being defrauded of money.

 

RCMP in Manitoba are urging the public to remain vigilant and report possible fraudulent activities following several incidents in the province.

 

RCMP in Portage La Prairie had 2 reports of phone calls where elderly victims reported being extorted for money from an individual claiming to be a lawyer for their grandchild, asking for bail money.

 

These incidents have been reported in multiple communities in the province, and fraudsters have taken large amounts of cash.

 

While the RCMP is investigating they are also raising awareness.

 

Criminals are using various means such as social media to collect personal information which can make them seem legitimate.

 

RCMP advises that you exercise caution when sharing personal information, be wary of calls that demand immediate action or money, and avoid calls claiming a family member may be in a dire situation.

 

Anyone with information regarding fraudulent activity in the community is encouraged to contact the RCMP.

Town Council Update

The town of The Pas Council met earlier this week to discuss financial matters, recycling service, and postal disruptions in the community.

 

Postal Services leading into the holiday season is a major concern and the mayor and council have been in contact with MLA Amanda Lathlin and MP Niki Ashton regarding services in town.

 

Mayor Murphy encourages anyone concerned about the disruption of services to contact local MLA Lathlin and MP Ashton.
