Early Morning Fire Burns Waller Cresent Residence

Emergency crews responded to a house fire on Waller Crescent here in The Pas
early Saturday morning. According to Chief Fire Prevention Officer Randy Manych, The call came in before 5 am and when the crews arrived the house was fully engulfed.

The fire started in a shed next to the house and spread to the homes attic.
A passerby saw the fire and woke the residents to warn them of the fire and
everyone was evacuated safely.


It is suspected that this fire was deliberately set. The investigation is ongoing.

The Pas Homecoming Events

There will be a discussions and a book signing with local authors Murray Harvey and Norm Richards at the Roy H Johnston Arena on August 5th at 2PM. People will also have a chance to watch The Violet Guymer Story at the Arena at 4PM.

 

There will also be a dance at the arena on the 5th from 9PM until 1AM and a free barbeque on the 6th from 1 until 3 PM. These events are part of The Pas Home Coming 2017. A complete list of events can be found at The Pas Community What’s Happening in the Tri Area Facebook Page.

 

Leasing Opportunities at Roy H Johnston Arena

The Town is in need of someone to lease and operate the The Roy H Johnston Arenas skate sharpening booth and the concession for the 2017-2018 seasons.

 

You must have liability insurance and August 11th is the last day to send in submissions. The True North Mud Run

The Pas Kinsmen’s Truth North Mud Run is set to take place on September 2nd and the Kinsmen Club is inviting kids to participate.  If your 10 to 13 years old you can sign up for only $25 dollars. Participants will run the full 5 KM.

 

Funds raised will go towards new Kinsmen Club projects

The Pas Town Crews Working on Fischer Avenue

The Pas Town crews will be conducting repairs on the back lanes on the 200 and 300 blocks of Fischer Avenue. This means there will be no access to the back lanes today from 7 AM until 3:30 PM. People in the area are asked to park on the front or side streets. The 2 hour parking by-law will not be enforced during this time

Halcrow Lake Golf And Country Club General Meeting

The Halcrow Lake Golf and Country Club is having a general meeting on August 1st. The public is invited to attend to ask any questions and bring up concerns that they may have in regards to the golf course.

 

One of the issues the course had this season was holes covered in water which discouraged players from wanting to play. Course Manager Orin Rambow says the course is alot dryer now.

 

The meeting is expected to take place at the golf course clubhouse at 7PM.

The Pas Handi Van Shutdown

The Pas Handi Van has issued a notice to clients that the Handi Van will be closed from August 7th until August 25th. Service is expected to resume on August 28th.

The Summer Traditional Pow Wow 2017

The Summer Traditional Pow Wow is set to run from August 12th until the 13th at the OCN Arbor Site. The event features singers and dancers from different provinces that bring their happiness and celebration of life that they share with community members.

 

 

2017 Voyagers Rendezvous Canoe Race

The 2017 Voyagers Rendezvous Canoe Race began in Rocky Mountain House Alberta on July First and they finished in The Pas area 23 days later.

 

Event Coordinator Cathy Schwengler says the race was inspired by a similar canoe race that took place on Canada’s 100th anniversary. The paddlers received a warm welcome from the residents of Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

 

All of the paddlers were indigenous and Schwengler believes that they were ambassadors for their communities that spread positive messages for indigenous people across the country.

 

The canoe teams paddled a total 1600 kilometers and visited a total 21 communities. Schwengler would like to thank the Opaskwayak Cree Nation for their hospitality.

 

The Pas And Area Animal Shelter Incorporated

The Pas and Area Animal Shelter Incorporated has been working for seven months fundraising and planning for a new animal shelter in The Pas. The goal of having an animal shelter will help to combat the number of stray pets in the community.

 

Member Lorraine Mcintosh says the organization is trying to decide whether they will build a new building for the Animal Shelter or purchase a building from one of three business owners that are willing to sell their buildings. 

 

The organization will meet again next week and Mcintosh hopes they will make their final decision.

The Pas Alliance Church Day Camp

The Pas Alliance Church is running the Mysteries inc. In Search of the Truth Day Camp from July 31st until August 4th. The camp features bible stories, games, and snacks and it will run each day from 1:00-2:30PM. The camp is free and is open to children aged 5-12. OCN Public Statement on Violence

The Opaskwayak Cree Nation recently issued a public statement regarding the recent acts of violence in the community.

 

According to a news release there are vulnerable persons in the community and elders require the communities support and assistance in protection.

 

Community members are reminded not to intervene if acts of violence are occurring as this is a risk to personal safety.

 

Acts of violence or our suspicious activity should be reported by calling 911 or the RCMP at 204-627-6200.

Clearwater Lake Boat Parade

There will be a boat parade at Clearwater Lake on August 6th as part of The Pas Homecoming 2017 Celebrations.  People that have boats and sea doo’s are invited to decorate them take part in the parade. Participants are asked to bring their boats to camper’s cove by 1:45 on August 6th.

 

The parade will start at camper’s cove and follow the shoreline to pioneer bay.

Mayor Jim Scott's Meetings with the RCMP Staff Sergeant

Last Week,The Pas Mayor Jim Scott had a meeting with RCMP Staff Sergeant Brent Mattice. Scott says the meeting was called over concerns that there may be an arsonist in town. Despite all of the recent fires the RCMP is very certain that there is no arsonist in The Pas.

 

They aslo talked about the traffic service in the community. A few years ago a deal was negotiated where the traffic services division in Cranberry Portage was to transfer to The Pas. The main reason behind the transfer is the policing rates are the highest expense that the town pays for, just under three million dollars a year.

 

Scott hopes increase the number of members assigned to traffic services in The Pas.

The Pas Terry Fox Run

A Terry Fox Run is set to take place here in The Pas On September 17th at The Pas Recreation and Wellness Centre. Registration begins at 1PM and the run begins at 1:30.

The Pas Homecoming Update

The Pas Homecoming has almost 200 people signed up and there is still time to register. People that sign up have a chance to win a framed photograph of the pas and area. You can register by emailing The Pas homecoming 2017 at outlook dot com or by picking up a registration form at Pineview Reality.

Metal Mel Memorial Run and Poker Derby

The Metal Mel Memorial Run and Poker Derby takes place tomorrow in memory of Mel Burgera.  The run begins at Kens Shell Service at 4PM and participants are asked to show up at 3:30 to register. The event will take place rain or shine and all proceeds will go towards The Palliative Care Program. For more information call Keith Burgera at 1-413-229-3067.

Town Crew Working on Paul and Bell Avenue

The Town of The Pas crews will be conducting maintenance today and tomorrow at the 300 block on Paul Avenue and the 200 and 300 block of Bell Avenue. The water will be shut down during work hours and residents living in the area have been notified.

Residents are asked to drive carefully around the construction zone.

NDP Labour Critic Calls on Pallister to Address Issues with Churchill Rail Line

NDP labour critic Tom Lindsey is urging premier Pallister to start working with the federal government, the City of Churchill and the surrounding communities to take over the rail line to Churchill before it is too late to make repairs.

 

Lindsey believes that if these delays continue Churchill and other northern communities will face economic disaster and residents will face great personal hardships as supplies become more expensive and difficult to obtain.

 

Omnitrax said that there is a very narrow window left this summer for repairs to be completed.

Manitoba NDP Leadership Race

The Manitoba NDP leadership race will feature two outstanding candidates for party leadership that will square off in debates across the province.

 

Provincial Secretary and Leadership Election Officer Keith Bellamy said in a news release that Steve Ashton and Wab Kinew represent clear options to lead the party.

 

The Leadership 2017 forums started in Brandon on the 18th. The next meetings take place in Gimli today, Thompson on July 24th and Winnipeg on July 26th.

 

The forums will be broadcast through the parties Facebook page and posted afterwards at youtube.com/NDP Manitoba.

The Town of The Pas Grace Lake Airport Meeting

The Town of The Pas held a special meeting on Monday to make sure that everyone is heading in the same direction regarding the ongoing issues with Grace lake Airport.

 

According to The Pas Major Jim Scott The Provincial Government announced in April they were ceasing there funding for The Grace Lake Airport that would eventually result in the airports closure.

 

Shortly after the announcement Missinippi Air asked for a letter of support on their effort to take over the ownership of Grace lake Airport and they were offering up the opportunity to mediate, so that both airports in The Pas could be seen in a viable and positive way.

 

Scott went on to say that the town hopes that the mediation can take place sooner or later, because they do not want to displace anyone or have people lose jobs. They want to ensure that The Pas Airport is no longer in a situation where it is losing money.

The Town of The Pas meeting with The OCN Blizzard Board

A letter from the OCN Blizzard Board was discussed at last weeks committee of the whole meeting at The Pas Town Hall. The letter stated that the OCN Blizzard Board met with council to talk about the status of the Junior A Team.

 

The Blizzard asked if the Town would allow them to hold two games at the Roy H Johnston Arena, and they requested if they could provide in-kind memberships for players to practice at the Wellness Centre. A resolution to grant the team these requests is expected to be passed at the next council meeting on August 16th.

 

Last winter the OCN Blizzard was notified that they would close at the end of the season and The Town of The Pas provided the team with a five thousand dollar donation towards their annual operations.

Culture Camp North of OCN

A culture camp is being held at Egg Lake North of OCN from July 25th until the 27th. The bus will leave at Tim Hortons at 8AM daily and camp will start with an opening prayer. The camp will feature drum making water teachings, music workshops, sweat lodges, and more. For more information call 627-7157.

 

The Pas and Area Animal Shelter Art Auction

The Pas and Area Animal Shelter has started an online art auction to raise funds for the Animal Shelter. There are all kinds of art and photographs to bid on while you support a good cause. You can go to the online auction at tpaas2017.eflea.ca The auction ends on July 28th at 8PM.

Get Caught in Motion

The Pas Community Renewal Corporation began their Get Caught in Motion Challenge on July 14th and it will wrap up on October 14th.  TPCRC will be looking for people on the streets doing something physically active for a chance to win a great prize.

The challenge is open to Residents of The Pas, OCN and The RM of Kelsey.

Monthly Mayor Reports from June

The monthly mayor reports for the month of June have been released. The Pas saw a Total of 152 disturbance of The peace cases, 28 cases of assault, 31 provincial traffic violations, 31 cases of theft, 45 mischief offenses, 24 missing persons, and 100 prisoners held.

 

The community of Cormorants offence rate was relatively low with only 6 offences committed all together. Most offences committed in The RM of Kelsey were provincial traffic violations, 55 in total.

House Fire on Constant Avenue

Early last Friday Morning, The Pas Fire Department responded to a structure Fire on Constant Avenue. Fire crews received the call around one in the morning and they were able to contain the blaze to one bedroom.

 

Chief Fire Prevention Officer Randy Manych stated that the house was in bad shape and has been vacant for quite some time. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

 

The Pas Slo Pitch League July 14th

The Pas Slo Pitch League will be having three games starting at 6:30 PM. Team T Plays the Stompers at Arena 1. The Fireballs face Tipsy 10 at Centennial Field, and The Paperworks Pounders take on the Alloettes at Kinsmen Field.

 

At 8PM the Hits and Giggles Play the Master Batters at Arena 1, The OCN Jac’s play the Balls Deep at Centennial Field, and the Blue Jays play the Son’s of P’s at Kinsmen Field.

The Pas Community Development Corporation Report

The Pas Community Development Corporation report was brought before town council at Wednesday night’s council meeting. The corporation is funded almost exclusively by The Town of the Pas and they are required to give an update on what is going on within the organization twice a year.

 

Mayor Jim Scott says they gave some information about the work they did during the scare last year at mill and they talked about hiring someone to work with the destination marketing group.

 

The corporation is also planning to send a letter of support to Missinippi Air to remain at Grace Lake Airport and to operate there.

 

Town of The Pas Public Hearing

A public hearing was held at The Pas Town Hall on Wednesday night regarding a variation application submitted by Michael O’Rourke for Michael’s Corner Store. O’Rourke is hoping to get a drive way entrance for a Tim Hortons drive thru at the corner store.  O’Rourke has been working on this plan for the past 16 months with the town.

 

One resident voiced her concern about the variation saying that it could lead to increased traffic putting people’s safety at risk. The application is expected to be brought up again at next month’s council meeting.

Variation Application for 330 Fischer Avenue Passed in Town Council

A variation application for 330 Fischer Avenue was passed at town council on Wednesday night. The application was submitted by Michael O’ Rourke and he will now be able to operate four parking spots on the property.  O'Rourke plans to start redevelopment of the building soon. There will be 1500 square feet on the bottom floor of the building and there will also be a couple of two bedroom apartments on the top floor.

Water Main to be Shut down in The Pas

The Town of The Pas Public Works Department will be turning off the water main on the 200 and 300 block of Edwards Avenue for repairs today and tomorrow.  The water main will be turned off around 7:15AM and is expected to be restored 4PM on both days. The town is recommending that you turn off your water heater until the repairs have been completed.

Fire at OCN K Centre

Early Monday morning the OCN Fire Department received a call of a possible structural fire at The Old K Centre Building. The fire crews arrived to find a fire at the back of the building and they had the fire out in a few minutes.

 

Fire Chief Gordon Lathlin said there was residue on the concrete of a flammable liquid, which may have been a contributing cause of the fire.

 

The Old K Centre building is being used for storing housing equipment. The investigation is ongoing.

Marathon For CF

Danny Halpin, from The Pas Kinsmen Club will be will running a marathon Called “Marathon for CF” on August 13th in Saint John, New Brunswick. The goal is to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis.

 

Halpin got the idea for the Marathon after hearing an inspirational speech at The District Convention by a young man from The Pas with Cystic Fibrosis.

 

The Marathon is 42 kilometers which Halpin estimates will take him 3 hours and 10 to 20 minutes. You can keep up to date with Halpin at the Marathon for CF Facebook page or you can track is progress at thepaskinsmen.com.

 

 

Kelsey Recreation Annual Kids Carnival

The Roy H Johnson arena is having the annual Kelsey Recreation kids carnival on July 29th from 1 until 5 PM at The Roy H Johnston arena. The event will feature all kinds of children’s activities for children to take part in.

Hudson Rekydall Mobile Clinic Update

Bonnie Meadows, from The Pas Precious Pet Kennels is still looking for people to sign up for the Hudson Reykdall Mobile Clinic. The program is run by Dr. Keri Hudson Reykdal and provides spaying and neutering for pets belonging to low income pet owners. So far, only three people have registered and at least fifty people are needed.

 

Bonnie hopes to have the clinic at the Kennels from September 14th to the 15th. She is also in need of at least 10 volunteers to help with the dogs at the clinic. The cost is 100 dollars for a male pet and 125 dollars for a female.

Million Dollar Hole in One

The annual CJAR Million Dollar Hole in One Event runs from July 11th till the 15th from 12PM till 9PM and on July 16th from 11AM until 3PM.

 

Proceeds will go towards the golf club and the curling club here in The Pas. Today is the last day to get early bird tickets for 15 dollars which can be purchased at the Halcrow Lake Golf and Country Club and Shane’s Music.

The 9th Annual Street Festival Registration

The Pas’s 9th Annual Street Festival takes place on August 5th. Registrations are now open for vendors that wish to take part in the festival. To sign up you can find a registration sheet at The Pas Community Renewal Corporations Facebook Page.

Town Centre Hotel Fire Update

The Pas Town Centre Hotel has burnt to a total loss in this morning’s fire. According to a report from The Canadian Press, firefighters responded to a report of a garbage fire around 3AM next to the hotel, before dealing with a grass fire near the establishment a couple of hours later.

 

There are no reports of any injuries and CJAR will continue to provide updates as the information comes in.

Fire Engulfs The Town Centre Hotel

A fire has fully engulfed the oldest hotel in The Pas. The Town Centre Hotel fire started around 4 o'clock this morning and fire fighters and the RCMP are on site. The police have set up road blocks in a two block radius of the hotel and they are asking residents to stay away from the area until further notice.

 

The cause of the blaze is not yet known. 102.9 CJAR will bring you updates as they become available.

The Pas Homing Coming Update

The Pas Homecoming is set to run from August 5th and the 6th at The Roy H Johnson Arena.  President Chairmen Jim Lamontagne says 104 people signed up for the homecoming but they are still in need of volunteers.

Mayor Jim Scott to Run in The Canada Games Torch Relay

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay for the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be coming through The Pas and OCN on July 10th. After being nominated to be torch barrier by town councilor Chad Zolinski, The Pas Mayor Jim Scott was chosen to carry the torch. Mayor Scott is very excited for this opportunity of a lifetime.

 

The torch relay is expected to start at 10:30 AM at the OCN Arbor and will wrap up at The Pas Manitoba Hydro Building. The 2017 Canada Summer Games are being held in Winnipeg from July 28th until August 13th.

The Pas Canada 150 Festivities

This year’s Canada 150 celebrations were a big success here in The Pas. The events included a parade, a flag raising ceremony, fireworks, and a free family screening of Despicable Me 3 at Lido Theatre.

 

Parade participants had the opportunity to win awards for their floats. The winners this year are: Great North GM for the best theme float, Pride for the best decorated float, The best marching group award went to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 19; The Sanderson Family won for the best decorated ATV, and the best decorated bike awards went to Azerielle and Anaka.

 

The Pas Community Renewal Corporation would like to thank all sponsors and volunteers that helped to make this year’s Canada Day celebrations a success.

Missinippi Airways Food Drive for Churchill

Missinippi Airways has set up donation bins at three stores in The Pas for people to leave non-perishable food items for the Town of Churchill’s food bank.

 

The donation bins can be found at Giant Tiger, Extra Foods and the Grub Box.  The airline has already made one trip and they plan to make their next delivery run to Churchill in a few days.

 

Rail transport to the Northern Manitoba community has been affected by flooding of the rail line.

Niki Ashton Visits OCN and The Pas

NDP leadership candidate Niki Ashton recently visited The Pas and Opaskwayak Cree Nation.  Ashton was invited to speak to a group of young OCN leaders and had the chance to listen to their priorities’ and concerns.

 

She also stopped by The Pas and met with MLA Amanda Lathlin who Ashton says has been advocating strongly for The Pas Constituency and the North.

 

Ashton will be visiting London, Ontario later this week and she will be taking part in the next leadership debate in Saskatoon on July 11th.

 

Raise The Woof Comedy Night

The Wescana Inn is holding the first “Raise the Woof” comedy night on July 14th. The event will include a 50/50 draw, celebrity items, a penny parade, and a chance to win a limited edition print donated by Robert Bateman.

 

Tickets will be available for sale today at the Grub Box from 4PM to 6PM. They can also be purchased at The Wescana Inn, The Pas Library, Northern Vet Clinic, and Shane’s in OCN.

The event runs from 8-11 PM and all proceeds will go towards The Pas and Area Animal Shelter.

Province to Modernize Regulations On Recreational Vehicles and Factory Built Homes.

Last Week, Growth Enterprise and Trade Minister responsible for the Office of the fire commissioner Cliff Cullen, announced that The Manitoba government is working to update regulations for recreational vehicles and manufactured homes.

 

Cullen stated in a press release that they look forward to hearing from Manitobans as they work to modernize outdated permit and inspection requirements while reducing administration burdens associated with enforcement rules.

 

The OFC has prepared a discussion paper on the proposed change. The paper can be found online at www.firecomm.gov.mb.ca.

NDP Calls on the Pallister Government to Guarantee Support for Children with Disabilities

Last Week, NDP Families Critic Nahanni Fontaine stated that the Pallister government should guarantee supports for children with special needs and not cut them.

 

The Pallister Government recently halted funding to the child care inclusion support program during a review only to restore it after a lot of pressure from parents and families.

 

Fontaine said in a news release that Manitobans have spoken strongly and supports for vulnerable children are off limits to this government’s agenda.

 

The province recently signed a federal agreement that will bring millions of dollars for Manitoba Child Care.

Hudson Reykdal Mobile Clinic Could be Coming to The Pas

Bonnie Meadows, from The Pas Precious Pets Kennel is hoping to have a low income mobile spay and neuter clinic called the Hudson Reykdal Mobile Clinic come to The Pas to provide spaying and neutering for low income pet owners.

 

The mobile clinic will be in Flin Flon on September 12th and the 13th and Meadow wants them to come to The Pas from September 14th to the 15th.

 

The clinic is run by doctor Dr. Keri Hudson Reykdal and she needs at least 50 people to register. If you wish to sign up or if you want more information call Bonnie meadows at, 623-3608.

 

It is not yet confirmed if the clinic will be coming or not.
