Drag Show in The Pas

Break free from the norms of society through singing, dancing, costumes, comedy and more.

 

Tri-Community Pride is taking over the Métis Hall this weekend for their annual drag show event in The Pas.

 

A family-friendly show will be free to attend starting at 2 pm.

 

But things will get even more interesting in the evening, with the adults-only drag show and social running from 7 pm until 2 am.

 

The afternoon family-friendly show is free, while the evening drag show and social will cost 25 dollars.

Smile Cookies Week

It's Smile Cookie Week again, and Tim Hortons in The Pas is raising funds for the OCN CFS Youth Centre.

 

All funds raised will support youth, and cookies are priced at two dollars each.

 

The cookies are available now until May 4th, and the order form can be found by emailing cynthia.young@opaskwayak.ca.

 

Previously, 50 percent of the funds were allocated to Tim Horton's camps and 50 percent to local charities. This time, however, 100 percent of the funds will be directed to local charities.

 

Pre-order deliveries will take place today, tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday at 10 AM.

First Aid Training at The UCN

The UCN in The Pas is hosting upcoming First Aid Training on May 3rd and 4th.

 

The Program can help prepare for volunteering, in the workplace, or even just preparing for an emergency situation that may take place at home.

 

Emergency and standard first aid training programs are running at the UCN Campus Board Room.

The MBCI's Rouges' Gallery

A Theatrical display of mystery and intrigue will take place at the MBCI this evening.

 

Rogues Gallery will open to the public, and interactive play and art shows will take place in the MBCI Gymnasium.

 

The Show is about two security guards trying to discover who destroyed a priceless art piece, or rather, who didn’t.

 

Tickets for the Show are 25 dollars, and funds being raised will go towards upgrading out-of-date lighting systems from the 60s.

 

Get your tickets at the MBCI Offices throughout the day or at the door this evening; doors open at 6:30.

RCMP in Grand Rapids make an Arrest

Two men were arrested last Thursday following a traffic stop south of Grand Rapids.

 

Officers conducted the traffic stop and observed open liquor, at which point the driver and passenger were both placed under arrest.

 

A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of additional bottles of liquor, a sawed-off shotgun, a large amount of Canadian currency and other drug-related paraphernalia.

 

Brenden Ettawacappo, 30, and Braden Simpson, 28, both from Kinosao Sipi Cree Nation, were remanded into custody on various firearms and drug-related offences.

 

RCMP Investigations are ongoing.

Candidates Forum in The Pas

The 2025 Federal Election Candidates Forum will take place tonight at the UCN in The Pas.

 

The Forum will start at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. For those who can’t attend, a live stream will be hosted on The Pas and Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

 

All party candidates for the Keewatinook-Aski Riding have been invited and will be discussing issues affecting the North.

 

Residents of the Tri communities are encouraged to take part and ask questions.

 

The Federal Election is being held on Monday April 28th and if you haven’t received your voter information card in the mail you should go to elections.ca and type in your postal code to determine your location to vote.

Red Dress Alert The Pas

Red Dress Alerts consultations are taking place in The Pas today and tomorrow, and the public sessions are geared toward determining the needs of the MMIWG+ communities.

 

The Alert is all about addressing issues, spreading awareness, and ultimately preventing gender-based violence in the MMIWG+ community.

 

Consultations are taking place in The Pas tonight at the Family Resource Center on 212 Edwards Avenue from 6 to 9 pm; tomorrow, there will be a meeting with service providers, community leadership, and organizations that have a vested interest from 9 am to noon at the kikiwak; and back at the Center tomorrow at 1 pm for a consultation with families and survivors of gender-based violence.

New Tri-Community Website Community Futures Cedar Lake Region

Community Futures Cedar Lake has launched a new Tri-Community Website.

 

The website is designed to benefit residents, businesses, and visitors in the Town of The Pas, OCN, and the Rural Municipality of Kelsey.

 

The new website focuses on access to community events, local news, government services, and business resources.

 

It will also help to enhance cooperation between the Tri-Communities.

Community Futures Cedar Lake Region Last Call for The Children's Business Fair

Tomorrow is the final day to register for the upcoming children's business fair during The Pas and Chamber of Commerce annual trade show and sale.

 

The Fair will give children ages 6 to 15 a chance to showcase their entrepreneurial skills.

 

The event is in partnership with The Pas and OCN Chamber of Commerce and Acton Children's Business Fair and will take place at the Roy H Johnston Arena on May 10th.

Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba Looking for Board Members

The Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba was started in the 80s to help fill the gap in services for people in the province with a dementia diagnosis and their caregivers.

 

The Society is looking for board members and needs representatives from across the province, especially the North.

 

They are currently looking for two board members.

 

Members need to be committed to impacting those affected by Alzheimer's and could contribute their own experience and the experience of your community members towards the cause.

War Film Being Shot on The OCN

Local filmmaker Steven Bignell, creator of ”My Son, My Father” and other locally produced films, is looking for actors for an upcoming shoot.

 

Open casting calls will take place at the Oscar Lathlin Collegiate on April 24th from 6 to 8 pm, and they are looking to fill multiple roles.

 

No experience is necessary for actors interested in trying out.

 

The Film is about two long-lost friends who reunite after 20 years during the war and how time and the war affect it.

UCN Investing in Health Care Aid Training in the North

The University College of the North has announced a significant investment of $619,000 aimed at significantly expanding its Health Care Aide training program.

 

This funding will increase the number of training seats from 30 to 130, enhancing access to health care education in The Pas, Swan River, Thompson, and other rotating locations.

 

The expansion will facilitate in-person instruction across all three primary sites, enabling UCN to better support healthcare partners and the communities they serve.

 

This initiative also seeks to address the pressing vacancy rate of approximately 50% in health care aide positions across the region, ensuring a larger pool of trained professionals is available to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services in Northern Manitoba.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will happen this week at the École Opasquia and the Kelsey Schools.

 

Registration for English and French immersion programs at the École Opasquia will take place tomorrow night at the school from 6 to 7 pm; Registration for the Kelsey Community School will take place at the same time.

 

Parents of eligible children are asked to bring their Child's medical card, birth certificate, passport, or baptismal certificate.

 

The open house events will allow parents and children to see the classrooms, meet the teachers, and learn more about the program.

The Ballantyne Project

The Ballantyne Project is a group of like-minded individuals who have come together to help support Indigenous youth on and off reserve.

 

Dwight Ballantyne, the project founder, has been speaking with youth countrywide, spreading awareness and support to help others find their value.

 

The goal is to provide Indigenous youth from across the country access to meal planning, IDs, Bank accounts and other things that people from larger urban areas take for granted.

 

There will also be access to college and trades training.

Home Routes in The Pas Tonight

The Home Routes concert series will wrap up for the season in The Pas tonight and feature the Irish works of Olivia Barrett and Ellen Gibling.

 

Gibling is a versatile harpist from Halifax with degrees in classical harp performance and traditional Irish performance.

 

Olivia is a contemporary folk artist trained in traditional Irish, Scottish, and Scandinavian Music.

 

The Home Routes Performance will take place this evening at the Sam Waller Museum, with doors opening at 6:30 and the show starting at 7 pm. Tickets are 20 dollars at the door.

UCN's Creative Writing

The UCN’s Creative Communications Students have been working on an extracurricular writing project that has seen students from both The Pas and Thompson campuses writing poetry, fables, short stories and more.

 

Over the last few months, students have spent Tuesday evenings writing.

 

The pieces will be placed in a Toniebox used at daycares and libraries in the communities to help showcase local writers in the area.

 

Fostering young writers in the community has seen lots of support and success as students in UCN’s Business department also recently released a series of children’s books that cover topics related to northern People.

Story Tellers Film Festival

The Story Tellers Film Festival is almost upon us.

 

This year a variety of indigenous films will be played that include “The Story of Private William Teichrib”, “Quest for the Bay – Indigenous women’s Adventure”, “The Sacred Gift”, “Singing Back The Buffalo”, “You Are Here: A Come From Away Story”, and “Any Other Way – The Jackie Shane Story”.

 

National Canadian Film Day will be celebrated on April 16th to coincide with the Film Festival in The Pas.

 

All the showings will take place at the Pas Regional Library starting at 5 pm.

 

It is free to attend, and refreshments will be served during the showing.

Q-doc Kiosk at The Pas Friendship Center

Sitting in a hospital waiting room for sometimes hours on end can be difficult to manage; work, family, and school are only some of the things that can interfere with it.

 

Q-doc is free, provincially funded, and accessible from the comfort of your own home with the goal to provide equal access to medical rights nationwide.

 

The Pas Friendship Center has set up a Q-doc kiosk to help alleviate some of the stress that goes along with accessing medical expertise.

 

The service being provided at the friendship center will include help opening a Q-doc account, creating profiles, print requisitions, and handle blood pressure reading, blood glucose reading, and temperature.

 

Staff at the Friendship Center will help walk you through the process to be able to access these services.

 

The Kiosk will be open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Sports Clinics in The Pas

Sports Medicine Clinics will be happening in The Pas and OCN for 2 days next week.

 

Dr. Maureen Kennedy, former resident of the community and sports med specialist will be working with athletes providing treatment recommendations for various sport related injuries.

 

On Friday, April 11th, Dr. Kennedy will be set up at the Beatrice Wilson Health Center, and on Saturday, April 12th, at the St Anthony General Hospital.

 

Appointments are open for anyone suffering from injuries related to physical activity.

The Pas Community Development Corporation Survey

The Pas Community Development Corporation is looking for community input on waste management practices being conducted by businesses in The Pas.

 

A research study is being done in partnership with the UCN's research ethics board.

 

The goal is to help determine needs and to come up with a plan to help with waste management and recycling in the tri-community.

 

The survey is being done anonymously; names and businesses will NOT be associated with any information collected.

 

The survey takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

The deadline to submit surveys is April 16th.

Children's Spring Break Events The Pas

There are lots of activities to take part in this week for children in the community during Spring Break.

 

The Beatrice Wilson health center is hosting a snowman building contest; submit entry photos to the center for a chance to win prizes.

 

A Free skate will take place at the GLMC this evening from 4 to 6pm, helmets are required.

 

Tomorrow a sliding event will take place at the hill next to the Beatrice Wilson health center from 4 to 6pm.

 

At the Pas Regional Library, an arts and crafting table has been set up with tons of crafting supplies. The table is open to public access during library hours, and a special Easter Breakout box has been set up at the library during spring break; head to the library before April 5th to take part.

 

OCN CFS is also hosting children’s events and activities during spring break, which will start today.

 

Children’s races will be happening at the GLMC starting at 2pm, there will be different age categories in foot race, shoe scramble, backwards run, and shoe kick competitions.

 

Tomorrow, there will be a window art coloring contest with a spring theme.

 

On Friday, a youth 4 on 4 hockey tourney will happen at the OCN Youth Center, and on Saturday, swimming will take place.

 

You are asked to gather at the OCN youth center ahead of the swim, rides will be provided.

UCN Grad Ceremonies Deadline

UCN Grad ceremonies are fast approaching and convocations will take place in Thomson on June 25th, and The Pas campus on June 27th.

 

The deadline to register for the UCN grad convocation is approaching this Friday.

 

Gown rentals cost 52.50$, but that price will double for any late applications and submissions will no longer be accepted after May 9th.

 

In The Pas, graduation ceremonies will take place at the Roy H Johnston Arena, and in Thompson, they will take place at C. A. Nesbit Arena.
