A fire broke out in the roof of the Otineka mall early Wednesday morning.

It was thanks to a quick response from the OCN fire department that the blaze was put under control and quickly extinguished.

The department got the call at approximately 7 am Wednesday morning thanks to a tip from the Paskwayak Gas Bar when staff had noticed unusual smoke coming from the building.

An investigation by the Office of the fire commission is underway, and more information will be made available when the investigation is complete.

The OCN Fire Department will also be hosting a pancake fundraiser tomorrow at the OCN Veterans Hall from 8:30 to Noon and is inviting the public to take part; Proceeds will go to support the upcoming 5^th Fireman’s Ball put on in the community with support from the Town of the Pas Fire Department.

The Town of The Pas is heading to the polls next month for its municipal election.

Voters will elect one mayor and six councillors from a field of candidates.

The three candidates for mayor are Herb Jaques, Ralph McLean, and James Ridderikhoff.

Eleven candidates are running for council: Gary Hopper, Cindy Stephen, Debbie Howell, Larry Foster, Shelley Ward, Randy Manych, Trent Allen, Carrie Atkinson, Alan Gibb, Jim Berscheid, and one additional candidate listed on the official notice.

Election Day is Wednesday, October 28th. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pas Metis Hall on Gordon Avenue.

Advance voting will be available October 21st at the Town Office at 81 Edwards Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mobile voting will also be available on Election Day at several health-care facilities, including St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Paul's Residence, Northern View Lodge, Kin Court, Pine View Manor, and Val Halla.

Voters who cannot attend in person may also apply for a sealed-envelope ballot. Applications can be made in person, by mail, or by email between September 30th and October 25th.

Identification may be required at the polls. Voters can use government-issued photo identification or, if required, two other documents proving identity.

Manitoba municipal elections are coming up next month and will be taking place on Wednesday, October 28^th.

Local Urban District committee members and councillors in the RM of Kelsey will be elected by acclamation, leaving the Reeves to go through the election process.

Running for Reeve for the RM of Kelsey are Valerie Berschide and Michael De Tremaudan.

For the office of councillor: Jarret Berezowecki, Joel LeSann, Davide Novo, Dan Davie, Hank Chevillard, and Mike DuBois will take over by acclamation.

For the Office Local Urban District: Tiffany Anderson and Terry McLennon will take over by acclamation.

Acclamation takes place when only one candidate has been nominated for the position, whereas an election will be held when multiple people have been nominated.

With the Municipal election only a month away, voting locations and opportunities will be announced by the RM of Kelsey soon.

As temperatures continue to drop, heading into the colder months, many Manitobans are starting to run their home heating systems. Manitoba Hydro is reminding Manitobans to take steps to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly.

Install a certified carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the home and near sleeping areas, and test the alarms regularly. Fuel-burning appliances should be inspected and maintained regularly. Ensure chimneys are cleaned regularly, and exterior vents are clear of snow, ice, leaves, and other debris. Never use barbecues, camp stoves, or fuel-burning space heaters indoors or in enclosed spaces. Never leave a vehicle running in an attached garage, even if the garage door is open.

If a carbon monoxide alarm does sound, leave the home immediately and call 911 from a safe location.

Manitoba Hydro says that working carbon monoxide alarms can save lives.

The Pas RCMP are searching for a missing female.

On September 21st, just after 3:00 PM, The Pas RCMP received a report of a missing 47-year-old female.

Henrietta “Melissa” Bear was last seen September 16th at the Wescana Inn in The Pas. She has not been heard from or seen since.

It is believed she is still in The Pas area or may have travelled to Pukatawagan. Her family and the RCMP are concerned for her safety.

Henrietta is described as 5’0” tall and was last seen wearing a black hat, camouflage-style hoodie, black sweatpants and white shoes with blue stripes. She was also carrying a gym-style bag.

The Pas Fire Department has been awarded up to $300,000 through the Canadian Red Cross 2025 Manitoba Wildfires Equipment and Training Fund.

The funding will purchase a fully equipped wildfire value protection trailer, along with other specialized equipment, designed to protect homes, businesses, and infrastructure during wildfire emergencies.

This investment will enhance the fire department’s ability to respond to wildfire threats. This announcement comes following a challenging 2025 wildfire season, which saw members of The Pas Fire Department assisting with wildfire operations in Flin Flon, Thompson, and Snow Lake.

Having the proper equipment when responding to active wildfires is essential. The funding for the equipment will go a long way in helping The Pas Fire Department continue to protect our community.

Local youth have the chance to volunteer at the Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival by joining the Youth Board. Youth Board members help plan, organize, and run events throughout the festival. It’s an opportunity to share your ideas, learn new skills, and work as part of a team.

Volunteering helps you gain confidence and a sense of purpose. Serving on the Youth Board provides an opportunity to experience Trappers’ Festival in a new way. Some of the events and activities Youth Board members help with include family fun, the pancake breakfast, the seniors show, and the scavenger hunt.

This Saturday, the Opaskwayak Cree Nation Fire Department will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser.

All proceeds from the breakfast will go towards the upcoming 5th annual Fireman’s Ball.

The menu includes pancakes, bacon, sausage, juice, coffee and tea. The breakfast costs $10 per plate and will be held at the OCN Veterans Hall from 8:30 AM until 12:00 PM.

University College Of The North recently celebrated the grand opening of its Bachelor in Ininimowin Program. This marks an important step forward in Indigenous language education.

The Bachelor in Ininimowin program allows students to develop proficiency in Cree while learning about local histories, cultures, and worldviews through language. The program helps students develop skills in communication, research, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Students in the program have the opportunity to complete a University Certificate in Ininimowin after one year, a University Diploma after two years, or continue to a three-year Bachelor’s degree.

The Bachelor in Ininimowin is offered at both UCN’s The Pas and Thompson campuses. No previous Indigenous language experience is required.

The Beatrice Wilson Health Center is reminding everyone that small, healthy choices make a big difference when it comes to taking care of your body.

Eat nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables, and limit processed foods. Getting quality sleep is essential- aim for 7-9 hours each night. Avoid smoking, vaping, and drug use- try to find healthy ways to cope with stress. Keep your body hydrated: water helps with energy, focus, digestion, and skin health. It is also important to listen to your body, pay attention to fatigue, pain, or changes in your health.

Good hygiene is important; remember to wash your hands often, and take care of your skin and hair. Staying active and moving your body will also lift your mood- find something you enjoy, such as walking, biking, dancing, or stretching, and do it often. Managing stress helps keep a calm mind- try mindfulness, meditation, and spending time in nature. Building healthy habits is about progress, not perfection.

With the election just around the corner, the Town of The Pas is looking for election workers to help out during the upcoming municipal election. Working at the election is a great way to help serve your community and to ensure a successful election day.

Norway House RCMP are investigating a homicide following the death of a 36-year-old man.

Police were called to a residence on Paupanekis Point shortly after 3 a.m. on August 11th for a report of a severely injured male.

Officers and First Nation Safety Officers arrived and were advised by EMS that the man was deceased, possibly as a result of a stabbing.

RCMP Major Crime Services took over the investigation, with Forensic Identification Services assisting at the scene.

Investigators determined there had been a confrontation inside the home between the victim and another man, who fled the scene. The two men were known to each other.

A 33-year-old Norway House man was later arrested without incident and is facing a charge of second-degree murder.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Lynn Lake RCMP are investigating the suspicious death of a 72-year-old man.

Police say around 7:30 Sunday morning, a cell guard at the Lynn Lake RCMP detachment reported seeing a man lying outside the building.

Officers found the man suffering from serious injuries and provided first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP believe the man had left his home and gone to the detachment after being assaulted.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services has taken over the investigation, with Forensic Identification Services also assisting.

Culture Days continues across The Pas, with a variety of events celebrating local art, culture, and community.

Today, a walking path mural will be unveiled at the end of Campbell Street at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Hobbit Birthday Celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. at Round the Bend on 731 Landels Road.

Tomorrow features rock painting and an open house at The Pas Animal Shelter from 6 to 7:30 p.m., along with an afternoon at the Sam Waller Museum from 1 to 5 p.m. and a board game night at the Library Annex at 7 p.m.

A walking tour, titled Ghost Walk, is planned for Friday, September 25th, starting at the Sam Waller Museum.

Then, on Saturday, September 26th, a quilt show will take place at the Métis Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., while The Comic Con runs at The Pas Library from 2 to 5 p.m.

And this Sunday, a nature walk and vendor sale will be held at the Grace Lake Boardwalk. The local 4-H will host a sourdough workshop at the Kin Centre, along with the Turkey Trot Poker Derby, and a family games day will run at the Sam Waller Museum.

Residents in The Pas can mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with two film screenings at the Métis Hall on September 30th.

The evening begins at 7 p.m. with The Red Dress, exploring themes of cultural identity, sexual assault, and the historical impact of colonialism on First Nations and Métis communities.

At 8 p.m., Ancestral Beasts will be shown, followed by a special question-and-answer session with filmmaker Tim Riel.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to honour residential school Survivors and remember the children who never returned home, while reflecting on the ongoing work of reconciliation.

Both screenings take place in the front room of the Métis Hall.

On Thursday, September 24th, the Sam Waller Museum will host a Home Routes Concert featuring Canadian Country artist Ashley Ghostkeeper.

On Orange Shirt Day, September 30th, the Cree Nation Tribal Health, in partnership with The Pas Friendship Center, OCN Ministikok Legacy Project, and OCN Government Services, is holding a walk to honour and support Every Child Matters, Intergenerational survivors, and allies across the tri-community.

Walkers can meet at The Pas Friendship Center or the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Area at 8:30 AM for orange shirt distribution. Walkers will begin their route at 10:15 AM and make their way to OCN’s Veterans Hall. OCN Youth Mahakinak Drum Group will lead the crowd, along with Residential School survivors and RCMP.

At OCN’s Veterans Hall, participants will register; there will be guest speakers and a survivors panel. Traditional dancers will perform, along with honour songs, and lunch will be served.

Manitoba and the federal government are marking the 12th annual Farm and Food Awareness Week, running through September 25th.

This year’s theme is “Community and Agriculture: Growing Together,” highlighting the connection between Manitoba communities and the people who grow and produce their food.

A free, family-friendly Discover Agriculture on the Farm event was held Sunday at the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre.

Local Food Day will also be recognized Wednesday, celebrating Manitoba farmers, local ingredients and the role local food plays in supporting families and communities.

Throughout the week, Manitoba Agriculture will share videos and resources online.

The Pas Friendship Center is sponsoring a series of free youth and family skates at the Roy H. Johnston Arena.

The skates are scheduled for today, from 4:15 to 5:15 PM. They will also be held on September 23rd from 4:15 to 6:00 PM and on September 28th from 4:15 to 5:15 PM.

Skaters must bring their own skates and helmet. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, and all skaters must sign in before ice time begins.

University College of the North has received more than 80-thousand dollars for a new research project focused on northern youth.

The two-year project will examine barriers Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth face when accessing services in Thompson, The Pas and Flin Flon.

Researchers will look at areas including mental health care, addiction treatment, education, employment and housing.

Led by Doctor Tariqul Islam, the project aims to develop recommendations that could make services more accessible and responsive to young people across Northern Manitoba.

It marks the first SSHRC-funded research project administered directly by UCN.

Residents from Rocky Lake to Moose Lake, including Clearwater Lake and Cormorant, are being advised of a planned power outage this Saturday, September 19th.

The outage is scheduled from approximately 8 am to 5 pm while critical upgrades are completed, affecting about 1,190 customers in the area.

Residents are encouraged to prepare ahead of time by having flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, a portable phone charger, and enough food and water for at least three days.

During the outage, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, unplug major appliances, and use flashlights instead of candles.

Anyone using a portable generator should operate it outdoors and away from windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Manitoba will remain on daylight saving time permanently.

Premier Wab Kinew says the province will not turn its clocks back to standard time on November first.

The decision follows a Manitoba government survey that received nearly 72-thousand responses. Ninety-two percent wanted to end the twice-yearly time change, while 58 percent preferred permanent daylight saving time.

The government says the change could benefit families, businesses and public health by providing more evening daylight and eliminating disruptions caused by changing the clocks.

Manitoba joins several other provinces and territories moving toward permanent time, including Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

The Town of The Pas is moving forward with an agreement to support Northern Lights Seniors Housing Co-op in developing much-needed seniors housing in the community.

Council is being asked to approve a land agreement that will allow the co-op to pursue grant funding.

The co-op will cover development costs, while the Town would be responsible for extending sewer and water services to the property line.

Current estimates put water servicing at about two hundred seventy-five thousand dollars, plus tax, with sewer costs estimated at fifty thousand dollars.

The work is expected to be at least two budget cycles away, with the Town also seeking provincial and federal grants.

Youth from across Manitoba gathered in The Pas this past weekend for the Manitoba Aboriginal Friendship Centres Indigenous Youth Gathering.

Members of the ECFC Navigation Horizon Program and ECFC Youth Council took part in the event, connecting with other Indigenous youth, sharing experiences, and building new friendships.

The gathering also included an election for Manitoba’s next Youth Representative, who will represent Indigenous youth from the province at the national level.

Maddy from the Dauphin Friendship Centre was selected for the role.

ECFC youth also participated in Strong Roots, Strong Leaders training, gaining leadership skills and knowledge to bring back to their communities.

The gathering also marked the 60th anniversary of the The Pas Friendship Centre.

This Friday, The Pas Regional Library is giving you the chance to explore the night sky. The Pas Regional Library presents: A Night Under the Galaxy with amateur astronomer Del Shand and his smart telescopes. Del Shand is an active member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and a local amateur astronomer. This event gives participants a chance to explore the galaxy and learn about constellations while enjoying stargazing and appreciating the beauty of the night sky.

The event will begin at 9:00 PM on Friday. Participants are asked to meet behind the Wellness Center and are reminded to dress for the weather.

The event is weather-dependent, clear skies permitting. An alternative date of Saturday, September 19th has been set in the same location.

The Pas Town Council is considering whether Deputy Mayor Atkinson should receive additional compensation while serving as Acting Mayor.

According to a report presented to council, Atkinson is taking on the mayor’s full responsibilities for approximately eight to nine weeks, including meetings, community events, document signing and other mayoral duties.

Council is considering three options: no additional compensation, paying the difference between the mayor and deputy mayor’s salaries, or approving another stipend.

The current monthly difference is 503 dollars and 50 cents. Administration has recommended council discuss the matter and provide direction.

The Town of The Pas could receive up to three hundred thousand dollars from the Canadian Red Cross to strengthen wildfire response.

Town Council is being asked to approve a funding agreement for a Value Protection Trailer and related equipment for the local Fire Department.

The equipment would help protect homes, businesses and critical infrastructure during wildfires, while also supporting emergency response in neighbouring communities.

The project would be fully funded through the grant, with no municipal capital contribution required.

Administration recommends Council approve the agreement to secure the fund.

Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute Spartan athletes will be going door to door tonight, selling their cash calendars to fundraise for the new school year. MBCI athletes can take part in 8 different sports throughout the school year. The money raised from the cash calendars will go towards covering tournament entry fees, allowing athletes to compete against schools from around the province.

Johan Elliot, an MBCI student and Spartan athlete, explains how calendar sales will work.

Cash is preferred, but an e-transfer payment option will also be available.

Spartan athletes will be out in the community from 5:30 to 7:00 PM selling cash calendars for $10 each. After calendar sales are over for the evening, athletes will reconvene at the school gym for pizza, games, and team bonding.

Volunteer Manitoba has teamed up with The Pas Community Renewal Corporation to hold a volunteer fair next week. On Wednesday, September 23rd, local organizations will be at the fair to recruit volunteers, answer questions, and spread awareness. The fair serves as an opportunity for anyone who is interested in volunteering in The Pas and surrounding areas to learn about how they can get involved.

Young women interested in taking part in the 2027 Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival Fur Queen Competition are being reminded that the application deadline is approaching.

The competition is open to women aged 18 to 24 who are interested in meeting new people, making new friends and experiencing the Trappers’ Festival in a unique way.

The 80th annual Northern Manitoba Trappers’ Festival is scheduled for February 17th to 21st, 2027, continuing a northern tradition that celebrates local culture and traditions.

The Manitoba Government highlighted a series of agricultural projects yesterday aimed at advancement across western Manitoba.

The projects include a proposed soybean crushing facility, which the province says could keep more of the value from Manitoba’s growing soybean industry in local communities.

Dauphin-based Vermillion Growers is also planning a 205-million-dollar expansion of its greenhouse operations.

The company currently operates a 10-acre facility, and plans to expand to 90 acres over three phases.

The province is also promoting Azure Sustainable Fuel Corporation, which is proposing a large-scale sustainable aviation fuel facility.

Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn says the projects could create long-term economic benefits and increase the value of Manitoba agricultural products.

Premier Wab Kinew says major capital investments in a series of Port of Churchill projects will be exempt from provincial sales tax.

The incentive would apply to projects including an energy corridor, LNG facilities, upgrades to the Hudson Bay Railway, and marine icebreaking capacity needed to support year-round shipping.

New studies estimate the icebreaking and marine upgrades could cost between 100 and 130 million dollars.

Kinew says the province is pitching the Port of Churchill to global investors as part of more than 85 billion dollars in proposed mining, infrastructure and agriculture projects.

He says the goal is to expand the port, strengthen trade and create jobs in Manitoba.

Swan River RCMP are investigating the death of a 21-year-old man on Sapotaweyak Cree Nation.

Police were called to the community on September 9th for a report of a suspicious death.

Officers found the man deceased on a community road and secured the scene before Major Crime Services took over the investigation.

An autopsy has determined the preliminary cause of death was an animal attack.

RCMP say the type of animal involved has not yet been determined.

Manitoba Conservation officials have been notified of the findings.

Oxford House RCMP have made a significant drug seizure at the community airport.

Police were called to the airport Wednesday, September 9^th, in the evening after a First Nation Safety Officer had a female suspect in custody.

An FNSO conducting a routine search of arriving passengers discovered a package believed to contain illicit drugs hidden in the woman’s clothing.

The package was found to contain cocaine with an estimated street value of 44-thousand dollars.

23-year-old Tiana Grieves of Oxford House has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and failing to comply with an undertaking condition.

Grieves remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and emergency services in the community have been gathering on a monthly basis to provide community engagement.

Stark says the meetings are aimed at getting community feedback on how their services are running locally, what improvements can be made, and what the community wants from local emergency services in The Pas, OCN, and surrounding areas.

The RCMP are reminding the public to drive safely in school zones now that the kids are back in class.

Stark went on to say that when school buses have their stop signs engaged, drivers should remain an ample distance behind or in front of the bus and remain stopped until the signs are retracted for both directions of travel.

Remain focused on sudden and unexpected changes in the school zones and give yourself extra time to get through these areas safely, without the added pressure of being late.

The Pas Community Renewal Corporation hosted the second session for their community strategic plan last week, discussing community needs and wants to help guide the program over the next few years.

The group is also prepping for lots of other events during Culture Days, including a youth and teen gathering and a jingle dress dancing workshop, with both happening on September 19th.

They are also working with Volunteer Manitoba to host a volunteer fair that will take place on Wednesday, September 23rd, at the MBCI. Holly Lajambe, event coordinator, shares.

Lajambe says you can register with Volunteer Manitoba, and they will give you a table or two to showcase the group and find local volunteers.

The Rod McGillivary Memorial Care Home and St.Paul’s Residence both recently received donations of $500 from 102.9 CJAR. The station ran its annual 100 Grand In Your Hand contest over the summer, collecting sponsorship from over 25 local businesses.

The donation to the care homes goes towards recreational programming. Quality of life for elders and seniors in the Pas and OCN is an area in the community that needs support.

Rod McGillivary Memorial Care Home’s administrator, Carla Constant, talks about how CJAR’s donation will be put to use.

Carla notes the importance of recreational programming within the care home, as it improves the residents’ mental health and facilitates physical movement and creativity.

The Pas Tri-Community Foundation will hold their annual General Meeting on September 28th at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place at The Pas campus of University College of the North in the Cafeteria.

At the meeting, The Pas Tri-Community Foundation will look back on their achievements of the past year and look ahead to what’s next for the Tri-Community.

The Annual General Meeting serves as an opportunity to learn more about the Foundation, which has impacts across The Pas, Opaskwayak Cree Nation and the Rural Municipality of Kelsey.

The Beatrice Wilson Health Center’s Diabetes Education Team will hold walk-in clinics on September 15th and October 6th. The clinic will provide education and support services tailored to people living with diabetes.

A dietitian and diabetes educators will be on site to answer questions regarding food, diet, blood sugar and medication management.

Those who attend a diabetes appointment will have their name entered into a draw for a chance to win a healthy food basket.

University College of the North is preparing to host its upcoming Linkages conference in The Pas.

The two-day event takes place October sixth and seventh at the U-C-N campus, with this year's theme, “Skills for the North.”

UCN communications coordinator Jackie Rechenmacher shares what Linkages is.

Rechenmacher says it provides a forum to identify workforce needs, explain ways to train, and highlight and create partnerships.

The conference brings together industry leaders, government representatives, economic development organizations, academics and community partners to discuss the future of Northern Manitoba.

The upcoming linkages event will be held in The Pas at the Métis Hall and will take place on October 6^th and 7th.

Legal Aid Manitoba is celebrating the grand opening of a new office in The Pas, expanding access to legal services for residents across northern Manitoba.

The organization provides legal assistance to people who meet eligibility requirements, with services covering areas such as criminal and family law, child protection and residential tenancy matters.

The new office will serve as an important northern hub, with Legal Aid staff also providing services to people in surrounding communities.

Peter Kingsley, executive director for Legal Aid Manitoba, talks about the organization's rich history in the province.

Kingsley says improving access to legal services in northern and rural communities is an important part of ensuring Manitobans can get the help they need, regardless of where they live.

The grand reopening of the new office will take place today at noon for members of the public to take a look at the new space next to Primary Health on Cook Avenue.

More than 10-thousand rural and northern Manitoba homes are set to gain access to high-speed internet through a new, multi-year expansion project.

The 157-million-dollar project is a partnership between the governments of Canada and Manitoba, Valley Fibre, municipalities and First Nations.

The project includes access to underused Manitoba Hydro fibre capacity, allowing Valley Fibre to connect or improve service for more than 3-thousand-500 households across 11 communities.

The initiative is backed by 120-million dollars in federal funding and financing.

Fisher River Cree Nation Chief David Crate says improved internet will help youth with their studies, keep elders connected with family, and improve access to health care and opportunities for Indigenous businesses.

The Pas Community Choir is starting its fall session tomorrow, September 10th. New members are welcome to try the choir for free, and once they commit, they can pay the $30 registration fee to help cover music and rehearsal space costs. The group performs a mix of sacred and secular music at community events throughout the year.

Andrew Legany, one of the choir directors, talks about what the choir will work on in the fall session.

The Choir will rehearse weekly on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the C. E. Wing of the Westminster United Church. The choir is open to all ages. Last year’s choir had approximately 40 members, and Andrew says they are expecting similar numbers for the upcoming session.

Fireworks, lights, lasers, and animatronics will be featured in this year's Ghostbusters-themed pyromusical. The show will include Ghostbusters music and other Halloween songs as well. The pyromusical will take place on October 3rd at 8:15 PM at The Pas Ag Grounds. Tickets cost $35 per person and are set to go on sale later this week.

The Manitoba government is expanding rent control, with more rental units set to fall under provincial regulations.

Public Service Delivery Minister Mintu Sandhu says the monthly rent exemption threshold will increase to two thousand dollars from one thousand six hundred and seventy, effective January first, 2027.

The government says the change is the largest expansion of rent control in decades and will provide stronger protections for thousands of Manitoba renters.

The 2027 rent increase guideline will also be set at 3 percent.

The Sam Waller Museum in The Pas is hosting a special Paint Night at the Museum this month.

The event takes place Thursday, September 17th, from 6 to 8 p.m., at 306 Fischer Avenue.

Guests will enjoy wine and refreshments, an exclusive tour of the museum’s latest art exhibit from artist Collette Balcaen, and a portrait-painting activity featuring the museum’s curator.

Participants will also get to vote on the curator’s costume.

Admission is 25 dollars, with the evening offering a unique mix of art, history and fun.

A new transitional housing complex in Winnipeg is providing more than a place to live for people experiencing homelessness.

Webb Place will offer up to 118 residents access to 24-hour, on-site supports through Indigenous-led organization N’Dinawemak.

Services include case management, crisis response, life-skills development, medication supports, cultural and spiritual programming, and connections to mental health and addictions services.

The Manitoba government has invested 25-point-four million dollars to purchase and renovate the building.

Officials say the goal is to help residents move toward permanent housing and prevent a return to homelessness.

Students looking for a hands-on learning experience are being invited to enroll in a new land-based course through the University College of the North.

The course will run from September to December, with 40 percent of the learning taking place through hands-on experiences in the field.

Students will work alongside Elders and knowledge keepers, learning about gardening, beekeeping, traditional medicines, and harvesting and preparing food from the land.

The course also explores Indigenous philosophies and land-based teachings.

Only eight spots are available, and participating students will receive a 1200 dollar stipend through CEWIL.

The first class is September 11th at 1 p.m. by Zoom.

Hands-on lessons that are a required part of the program are currently scheduled to run out of Thompson, but work is being done to try to make them available in The Pas as well.

The Northern Manitoba band Low Budget Rockstar consists of members Kennie Henderson, Harley Whitehead, and Terry Constant. They have been seeing success in their music career while promoting the reclamation of Indigenous languages, culture, and community.

Low Budget Rockstar signed with their record label New Sun Music in 2023. Their most recent release, Cotton Candy, has a music video to go with it, released on YouTube today. Cotton Candy was recorded at the House of David Studio on Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Pas RCMP made an arrest during a traffic stop recently.

On September 3rd, just after midnight, while on patrol, The Pas RCMP conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Cathedral Avenue and Campbell Street.

While officers were speaking with the female driver, drug paraphernalia was observed in plain view inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested, and a subsequent search of the vehicle was executed. Additional drug paraphernalia, plus a large sum of Canadian currency, was located.

The 45-year-old female from The Pas has been charged with Possession for the purpose of trafficking and was later released on an Undertaking.

The Pas Fire Department will hold a Paid-On-Call Recruitment Information Session on September 10th. Those participating can meet the crew, tour the equipment, and learn what it takes to become a paid-on-call firefighter.

There will be an interactive Q&A with current firefighters and leadership members, an overview of the recruitment and physical assessment process, and station and apparatus tours.

The information session will be held at The Pas Fire Hall from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on September 10th.

With the fall and winter months fast approaching, the Beatrice Wilson Health Center is reminding parents of car seat safety tips to remember to keep babies safe and warm in their car seats. Some winter clothing can make a child’s car seat unsafe by causing an improper fit, meaning the child is not strapped in properly.

Babies should be dressed in thin, warm, well-fitted clothes, with hats and mitts when they’re in their car seats. Avoid bulky clothing, snowsuits, and bunting bags.

Older children should unzip their winter coats in the car before they buckle up, to reduce bulk under the seat belt. Older children should also avoid wearing bulky clothes and snowsuits in the car.

Cross Lake RCMP are investigating the suspicious death of a 17-year-old female from Pimicikamak Cree Nation.

Police were called Sunday afternoon after a body was discovered in a wooded area in the community.

An autopsy confirmed the victim’s identity. She had been reported missing on August 22nd, after last being seen by family on August 17th.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services are now leading the investigation.

Health officials are raising awareness about HIV as Manitoba sees a sharp increase in new cases.

The province declared a public health emergency in May, after 328 new HIV cases were reported in 2025, compared with 90 in 2019.

Krista Tooley with the Play it Safer Network says HIV rates are highest in Northern Health and Prairie Mountain Health.

They’re encouraging people to get tested and know their status, noting some people with HIV have no symptoms and may not know they’re infected.

Chemawawin Cree Nation RCMP are investigating an armed robbery at a business on Arena Road.

Police were called just before midnight on August 28th after an unknown male wearing a red face covering and goggles entered the VLT area, fired a gun twice into a wall, and took an undisclosed amount of money from a cash drawer.

No one was injured, as patrons safely fled when the suspect entered.

A second male reportedly locked the business door with a chain and padlock before both suspects left on foot toward the school.

Police Dog Services and Forensic Identification Services assisted, but the suspects were not located.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Chemawawin RCMP or crime stoppers anonymously online.

A long-awaited bridge project near Sea Falls is moving closer to reality.

Norway House Cree Nation says a new bridge structure will be built on Provincial Road 373 over the Nelson River East Channel.

The project has been pursued by the community for the past couple of decades and is now expected to become a reality within the next three years.

Four roadway alignment options were examined as part of the design process, with a preferred route now selected.

Representatives from Manitoba, along with project consultants, are expected to return to Norway House, with community meetings resuming in early 2027.

September is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, with World Alzheimer's Day on September 21st. The campaign highlights the importance of early diagnosis, warning signs, and support for those with loved ones who are struggling.

The Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba has many virtual programs, over the phone counseling, and virtual support groups for individuals with dementia and care partners. The Family Education Series put on by the Alzheimer's Society brings in experts to discuss topics helpful to those affected by Alzheimer's. Several Family Education sessions are slated for this fall.

Legal Aid Manitoba is opening a new office in The Pas. The Official re-opening of the Northlands Law Center after a devastating fire in March of 2022 is set for September 10th. The Office is located at 123 Cook Avenue. Legal Aid Manitoba's first office in The Pas opened 50 years ago in 1976.

Legal Aid Manitoba’s Executive Director Peter Kingsley notes the reopening of their office provides the opportunity to reconnect with the people and communities they serve. He says they worked with local artists to create a mural in the office, representing their connection and service for local indigenous peoples.

Local organizations, members of the public, and the media are invited to attend their reopening celebration on September 10th, from noon till 2:30 at 123 Cook Avenue. Those attending can tour the space and enjoy refreshments and a light lunch. 

Manitobans can enjoy free entry to provincial parks over the Labour Day long weekend, including Clearwater Lake Provincial Park.

The Manitoba government says vehicle permits will not be required from September fourth through seventh, giving visitors a chance to enjoy hiking, paddling, camping and time at the beach without an entrance fee.

Camping fees still apply, and reservations can be made through Manitoba Parks.

Visitors to Clearwater Lake are reminded to keep campsites clean, follow all fire restrictions, fully extinguish campfires and keep pets on a leash.

Beachgoers are encouraged to take advantage of the last long weekend before the kids head back to school.

Backcountry hikers and paddlers are also encouraged to register their trips online for added safety.

Drivers in The Pas are being advised of road work and traffic disruptions today, Tuesday, September 1st.

Work will take place around the intersection of Fischer Avenue and Third Street, beginning at about eight a.m. and lasting several hours.

The 200 and 300 blocks of Fischer Avenue will see parking disruptions as traffic is rerouted.

Road closures will also be in effect at Third and Edwards, and Third and Larose, with detours in place.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead and use caution in the area.
