OCN Storm Head to Norway House

The OCN Storm are on the road today as they prepare to face the Norway House North Stars later tonight.

 

The North Stars hold on to the final playoff spot in the KJHL with 29 points, 9 points ahead of the OCN Storm who are fighting to earn their way back into the playoffs.

 

Tonight's game will be broadcast live on CJAR immediately after your Royal Canadian Legion bingo game.

Highschool Curling and Basketball.

This past weekend was a busy one in high school sports. The Pas Curling Club hosted the Zone 11 curling championships on Friday and Saturday. The Margaret Barbour Spartans Varsity Girls team came second in the tournament. Beating out teams from Snow Lake and Thompson, but falling to the Hapknot Kopper Kweens 9-4. The MBCI Varsity Boys team beat out both Hapknot Kopper Kings teams, claiming first in their tournament with a similar score of 9-4.

 

In high school basketball, both The MBCI Spartans Junior Varsity Girls team and the Boys Blue team played hard in their tournaments, however placing fourth.

Blizzard Games Today and Tomorrow

The Blizzard are on the road tonight in one of two games for the team this weekend. Tonight they face former Blizzard and Flin Flon Bomber Ashton Paul, who was traded to the Kings at the trade deadline. Tomorrow the Blizzard host the Swan Valley Stampeders at the Roy H Johnston Arena. Saturday's game will be broadcast live here on CJAR starting at 7:15 PM with your pre-game show

Zone 11 Curling Championships

The Zone 11 Varsity Curling Championships take place today above the Roy H Johnston Arena. The MBCI Spartans are the lone team from the RM of Kelsey. Hapnot Collegiate has one girl's team and two boy's teams participating.

The OCN Storm Were in Winnipeg Over The Weekend

The OCN Storm, along with every other team in the KJHL were in Winnipeg over the weekend for the KJHL Showcase. As many Storm Players remained on the injured list including star forward Drew Peters, the team still gave it their all. After suffering a 9-1 loss on Friday to the PBCN Selects the OCN Storm faced the Waywayseecappo Wild on Sunday in an early morning game. Ron Campbell earned a hat trick and Domi Leask scored two as the OCN Storm pulled ahead of the Wild 7-4 before the afternoon. The Storm have a little over a week to recuperate before they host the Cross Lake Islanders on January 31st.

Tough Weekend For The Blizzard

The Blizzard had a tough weekend at home against the Winnipeg Blues and Virden Oil Capitals. On Friday, The Blizzard took advantage of two power-play goals and Sam Zagari scored a late second-period goal allowing for a one-goal lead heading into the third period. An early third-period goal from Blues forward Cole Penner later forced overtime, allowing Carter Demelo to score the game-winning goal against the Blizzard.

 

On Saturday the Blizzard faced their division Rivals, The Virden Oil Capitals. Virden came hard at the Blizzard during the first period, scoring three goals and not allowing the Blizzard to get past Liam Bechthold. Oil Capitals Forward Nolan Chastko scored the final of three goals during the first period, and followed up with two more goals during the second period, earning him a hat trick. Despite the lead, the Blizzard pushed on as Miguel Bouvier scored a goal during the second and third periods, and Sam Zagari scored the final second-period goal. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Virden Oil Capitals kept the pressure on and ended the night 6-3 against The Blizzard.

 

This weekend The Blizzard stay in their division as they head to Dauphin to face the Kings and former Blizzard Ashton Paul. On Saturday the Blizzard return to the Roy H Johnston Arena as they host the Swan Valley Stampeders.

The Pas Huskies Teams Were In Thompson Over The Weekend

There were lots of Huskie wins over the weekend in Thompson.

 

The U9 Huskies Red team won Bronze against the Dauphin Dynamite in overtime.

 

In overtime, the U13 1st Team took gold against the host team as Aiden Lathlin scored the game-winning goal.

 

The U13 2nd team won the Landers Cup, earning bronze in the tournament.

The Blizzard Are on The Ice Today and Tomorrow

The Blizzard are on the ice tonight and tomorrow in a pair of games at the Roy H Johnston Arena.

 

Tonight the Blizzard hosts the league trailing Winnipeg Blues before going up against the division leading Virden Oil Capitals Tomorrow. The puck hits the ice at 7PM for both games.

 

Both Games will be broadcast live here on CJAR starting at 6:45 with your pre-game shows.

KJHL Showcase This Weekend

Lots of hockey on the go This weekend. The OCN Storm are in Winnipeg preparing for the KJHL Skills Showcase.

 

They Kick off the showcase with a rematch against the PBCN Selects this afternoon, followed by a game against the Waywayseecappo Wild on Sunday.

 

Sunday's game will be broadcasted live on CJAR starting at 9:45 AM.

Super Bowl Funspiel

Why not have some fun before watching the Super Bowl next month?

 

The Pas Curling Club is hosting a Super Bowl Funspiel on February 11th before the big game. The First draw hits the ice at 10 am with 4 end games, followed by a viewing party of Super Bowl 58. You won't have to leave for food before the game either, as a pizza dinner will be provided!

 

Registration cost is $20 a person or $10 for students. There is a 16-team limit and you are encouraged to register as a team, couple, or individual. Members can register at The Pas Curling Club, while non-members can email inturn@mymts.net to enter.

OCN Storm Fall to The PBCN Selects

The OCN Storm had a rough matchup against the PBCN Selects last night.

 

Cedrick Puffalt scored the game's first goal early into the first period, but the PBCN Selects answered with three goals no more than two minutes apart in the final 10 minutes of the period.

 

Chase McLeod started the second period off with a short-handed goal before the Selects Pavlo Kobikov scored his first of three goals of the night against the storm and Harlan Jacobson scored a short-handed goal for the Selects.

 

Cedrick Puffalt scored the final Storm goal during the third period as the PBCN Selects ended the night 8-3 against the OCN Storm.

 

The two teams will meet again on different ice this Friday as they start the KJHL Showcase in Winnipeg.

OCN Storm Vs PBCN Selects Tonight

Tonight the OCN Storm hosts the PBCN Selects in the lone game in the KJHL.  Tonight's game will be a preview of the first round of the KJHL Showcase set to take place this weekend as both teams are set to face each other this Friday at the Hockey For All Centre in Winnipeg.

 

The puck drops at 7:30 PM at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre. 

 

 

Blizzard Lose To The Titans

The Blizzard had a tough rematch against the Neepawa Titans on Friday. The Titans snuck four goals past Tomas Anderson in the first 25 minutes of play before Loic Morin was sent out to the ice to slow down the Titan's scoring. Quincy Supprien scored the lone Blizzard goal during the second period before a scoreless third period led the Titans to a 4-1 win over the Blizzard. Sunday's game against the Dauphin Kings was Postponed due to the extreme weather. The Blizzard hit the ice again this Friday when they host the Winnipeg Blues.

 

OCN Storm Fall Short Against The Flames

it was a close weekend for the OCN Storm as they faced the NCN Flames in back-to-back games. Despite a 2-0 lead in the first period during Saturday's game, both teams were evenly matched, leading to an overtime shootout where the Flames outscored the Storm 2-1 and ended the night 6-5.

 

During Sunday's afternoon game, Hutton Foster scored during the second period, but it was the lone OCN Storm goal. The NCN Flames Ethan Portey scored two, and Conroy Halcrow scored one in the final minutes of the third period as the game ended 3-1 for the Flames.

 

The OCN Storm will host the PBCN Selects Tomorrow at the GLMC before heading to the KJHL Showcase this weekend.

Blizzard On The Road and Home This Weekend

The Blizzard are on the road tonight in one of four games across the MJHL. The Blizzard are in Neepawa as they prepare to face the Titans. The two teams clashed less than a week ago, with the Blizzard earning two points after a 4-2 victory. After Tonight The Blizzard host the Dauphin Kings at the Roy H Johnston Arena on Sunday at 7 PM. That game will be broadcast live here on CJAR starting at 6:45 PM.

Also tonight the Swan Valley Stampeders are in Steinbach, the Winnipeg Freeze faces the Terriers and the Selkirk Steelers are in Virden.

OCN Storm Make Trades and Re-Sign a Familiar Face

The OCN Storm made some big moves yesterday with the Waywayseecappo Wild, trading forwards Waylon Munroe Jr., Antonio Constant, Christian Buck, and Goaltender Morgan Mercredi.

 

In return, the OCN Storm receives forwards Cedrick Puffalt, Trayden Guiboche, and Goaltender Marcus Scott and a player development fee.

 

On top of the trades, Local Keilan Holland returns to junior B hockey after re-signing with the OCN Storm. Last season Keilan made 3 regular season and 4 playoff appearances. He's also made appearances as a Blizzard, playing 50 games over two seasons with the team, welcome back Keilan!

Ashton Paul Returns to the MJHL

You'll likely see another familiar face during Sunday's Blizzard game against the Dauphin Kings. The Flin Flon Bombers Traded 2004-born and former Blizzard Ashton Paul to the Dauphin Kings in exchange for 03 Defenceman, Anthony Bax and future considerations.

 

Ashton earned 56 points last season as a Blizzard, with 26 goals and 30 assists.

Blizzard Add 3 to The Roster at Trade Deadline

As the trade deadline ended yesterday, the Blizzard made three big trades to add to their roster.

 

The Blizzard acquired 2004 born, center Griffin Ayotte From the Swan Valley Stampeders. Griffin has scored 6 goals and 7 assists over 32 games this year.

 

The Blizzard also acquired 2005-born defenseman Blake Ekren-Bratton from former Blizzard head coach Doug Johnson and the Melville Millionaires.

 

The final trade of the night saw the return of Cheechoo Lathlin, from the Flin Flon Bombers. Cheechoo returns to his home community after spending two seasons with the Bombers. Before that, he played with the Norman Northstars U18 AAA program, earning 49 points in 36 games. Cheechoo has also played 6 games with the Blizzard during the 2021-2022 season.

 

All three players come at no cost to the Blizzard roster as they were each acquired for player development fees!

 

Your first opportunity to see them on the ice comes this Sunday as the Blizzard hosts the Dauphin Kings at 7 PM.

OCN Storm Have a Winning Weekend

It appears the winter break was much needed for the OCN storm as it resulted in back-to-back wins against the Cross Lake Islanders over the weekend. On Saturday the OCN Storm hosted the Islanders in both team's first game back, ending with an impressive 9-2 win. On Sunday the Storm won with a final score of 10-4 against the Islanders. 4 of those goals were scored by Drew Peters, who now is only one point away from reclaiming his spot as the KJHL's scoring leader. It seems the holidays breathed some much-needed life into the team but they still have a battle ahead of them if they want to make the playoffs this year. The OCN Storm now sit in 5th place in the KJHL, 6 points behind the Norway House North Stars for the final playoff spot. The OCN Storm host the NCN Flames this weekend in a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday.

Blizzard Earned 5 Points Last Week

The Blizzard had a successful week on the road and at home.

 

On Thursday the Blizzard opened up the new year with a shutout victory over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. During a clean, penalty-free first 40 minutes of play, Reeve Sukut scored late into the second period. Keenan McNeill and Brett Ward scored during the final period, ending the night 3-0 for The Blizzard.

 

On Saturday The Blizzard played their first home game of 2024 against the division-leading Virden Oil Capitals. Ethan Bibeau opened up scoring early into the first period before the Oil Capitals pulled ahead 12 minutes in with two back-to-back goals only 6 seconds apart. During the second period, The Virden Oil Capitals Ty Plaisier was sent to the penalty box after an interference call, allowing Marlen Edwards to score a goal and tie the game at 2 all. This tie lasted through to an overtime shootout where a loan goal from Nolan Castko ended the night 3-2 for the Virden Oil Capitals.

 

On Sunday The Blizzard were in Neepawa as they prepared to face the Titans, who are holding on to the final playoff spot in the West Division. During the first period, The Neepawa Titans opened up scoring in the second half. The Blizzard later took advantage of two power play opportunities, allowing Lucas De La Salle and Miguel Bouvier to score less than 3 minutes apart. Quincy Supprien scored during the final 90 seconds of the second period, and Sebastian Hamming scored on an empty net with less than a minute left of the third period to end the night 4-2 for The Blizzard.

 

After earning 5 points over last week The Blizzard sit only 3 points behind the MGEU West division-leading Virden Oil Capitals.

 

The Blizzard are back in Neepawa this Friday to face the Titans, before heading to Dauphin on Sunday.

A Program for Kids is Returning This Month

Recreation Gymnastics is making its return to the Kelsey Recreation and Wellness Centre this month. Beginning January 10th and running until the 29th kids in kindergarten to grade 8 can head to the Wellness Centre and learn new techniques to keep flexible. The Cost to register is $60 and can be done by either phone, email or at the Wellness Centre front desk.

Hockey Tournament This Weekend

The A&W and Funky Threadz U9 Hockey Tournament hits the ice this weekend at both the GLMC and Roy H Johnston Arena.

 

Teams from all over Manitoba will hit the ice starting on Friday and ending with the finals in each group on Sunday Afternoon.

Open Ice Days Returns

Open Ice days return to The Pas Curling Club this weekend. This Sunday, December 7th, experienced curlers and those new to the sport are welcome to hit the rinks from 2-4 PM.

 

There are how-to sessions available for those looking to learn the sport.

 

Participants must wear clean indoor shoes and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
