Blizzard and Storm Open Regular Seasons This Weekend

Both the Northern Manitoba Blizzard and the OCN Storm are set to kick off their regular seasons this weekend. The Blizzard hit the road for back-to-back games against Selkirk and the newly named Winnipeg Monarchs. Meanwhile, the OCN Storm will play host to the Norway House North Stars tomorrow at the GLMC.


102.9 CJAR will be on the road this year with your Northern Manitoba Blizzard. Puck drop for tomorrow’s game against Selkirk is at 7:30 P.M., while Sunday’s matchup against Winnipeg is set for 6:00 P.M. Be sure to tune in to our Blizz Broadcasts or head down to the GLMC to cheer on your reigning KJHL champions.

Busy Weekend Ahead for Northern High School Sports

A few volleyball tournaments and a soccer championship will be taking place not only here in the north but also across the province. OLC will host the Zone 11 Girls' and Boys' Soccer Championship starting this Sunday at the Arbor and OLC fields. A total of six northern schools will compete for not only a Zone 11 championship banner but also a chance to represent their school at the upcoming provincial championship.
 

Meanwhile, starting today, MBCI and UCN will be hosting their Senior Varsity Boys and Girls Volleyball Tournament. Much like the Zone 11 Championship, several northern schools will be arriving to take part.
 

Lastly, both JV girls squads from R.D. Parker Collegiate and MBCI will be travelling south to participate in tournaments. The Trojans will compete at John Taylor Collegiate in the Volley Piper Classic, while the Spartans will head to Virden Collegiate Institute for their JV Girls Fall Classic.

Step Into Fun: Line Dancing Starts October 7th

For those interested in learning how to line dance, lessons will start in the next few weeks at The Pas Sweatshop. The program will run for six weeks at a cost of $50 per person. Two classes will be held each week on Tuesdays and Fridays.


The Tuesday sessions begin on October 7th and run from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., while the Friday classes start on October 10th and go from 6:45 P.M. to 7:30 P.M.

Northern Schools Shine in Weekend Volleyball Action

Several volleyball tournaments took place across the province over the weekend, with several northern schools excelling against tough competition. Two JV girls’ teams from MBCI, along with OLC’s JV girls, travelled to Thompson to compete in R.D. Parker Collegiate’s Northern Lights Tournament. In the JV girls’ final, the Hapnot Kopper Kweens defeated the Grand Rapids Wolverines, while the JV boys’ final saw the R.D. Parker Collegiate Trojans edge out the Mikisew Mikisew squad in a tight battle.

Meanwhile, MBCI’s JV boys were in Brandon for the Brandon University JV Boys Tournament. After round-robin and playoff action, the boys finished in fourth place out of thirteen teams.

Lastly, MBCI’s SV girls made the short trip to Creighton Community School, where they captured the Kodiak Border Battle title to kick off their season.

Opaskwayak Soccer Association Sets AGM for October 5th

The Opaskwayak Soccer Association has announced the date for its upcoming Annual General Meeting. The AGM will be held on October 5th, with a total of six positions to be filled.

No prior soccer experience is required to get involved. As an entirely volunteer-run organization, all current members dedicate their time to growing the league, supporting the community, and keeping kids playing the sport they love.

Blizz Alumni Shine: Timmerman Makes WHL Roster, Hirst Signs with Warriors

One of the most significant pieces from last season’s championship run has cracked a WHL opening night roster after a successful tryout. Blizzard goaltender Taye Timmerman will be taking his talents to the Saskatoon Blades for the 2025–26 hockey season.

Timmerman’s play in both the regular season and postseason was nothing short of outstanding. His performance earned him Co-MVP honours of the Turnbull Cup Playoffs, shared with Dauphin netminder Cole Sheffield.

In other exciting Blizzard alumni news, defenseman Benson Hirst signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Moose Jaw Warriors yesterday. Hirst, who joined the Blizzard late last season, quickly made an impact on the defensive end, catching the attention of scouts and fans alike. Following the season, he also committed to Northern Michigan University to continue advancing his hockey career.

Provincial Golf Championship Tees Off Friday in Oak Lake

High school sports are back in the province, and this Friday, the Provincial Golf Championship will be held at the Oak Island Resort & Golf in Oak Lake, MB.

Several schools from Northern Manitoba will be represented, including the R.D. Parker Collegiate Trojans, the Chemawawin Eagles, and the Margaret Barbour Spartans.

The Trojans and Eagles will each field a team in the girls category, while the Spartans and Trojans will both compete in the boys category.

Try Something New: Pas/OCN Armwrestling Club Invites Participants

Happening every week at 70 Bell Avenue, the Pas/OCN Armwrestling Club will be meeting from 7:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M.

Whether you’re looking to try something new or already have a knack for this unique sport, the armwrestling club is worth checking out. The club is open to both men and women.

Northern Manitoba Blizzard Make Big Moves Ahead of September 27th Opener

After wrapping up their preseason schedule this past weekend, the Northern Manitoba Blizzard now have their sights set on their September 27th regular season opener against the Selkirk Steelers.

In other Blizzard news, head coach and general manager Ty Valin was active on the trade front, making several moves to bolster the roster ahead of the regular season.

On September 10th, the Blizz traded two PDFs in exchange for Humboldt Broncos defenceman Erik Stelbasky and La Ronge forward Owen Wilkinson. The following day, on September 11th, a blockbuster trade went down between the Niverville Nighthawks and the Blizzard. The Blizz dealt defenceman Aaron Krestanowich and forward Tyler Bernier in exchange for forwards Lane Apperley and Kanye Huang, along with a PDF.

Additionally, forward Louis-Jacob Beauregard was traded to the Edmundston Blizzard of the MHL in return for a PDF.

Local Hockey Spotlight: Storm Tryouts and Blizzard vs. Bombers Showdown

The OCN Storm will be holding tryouts this weekend for players aged 16–21, running from Saturday, September 13th, to Sunday, September 14th, at the Roy H. Johnston Arena. Thanks to a recent sponsorship, the tryout fee has been reduced to $50 per player. Anyone who previously paid more than the new payment will be refunded the difference.

Registration takes place tonight in the GLMC lobby from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Ice session schedules will be distributed once registration is complete.

In other local hockey news, the Northern Manitoba Blizzard are set to face the Flin Flon Bombers in the final chapter of the Battle of Northern Manitoba. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 P.M., with our Blizz Broadcast, brought to you by Shane’s, beginning around 7:15 P.M. with the Funky Threadz Pre-Game Show.

From Swimming to Fitness: Kelsey Rec Announces Upcoming Programs

Since yesterday’s Parade of Programs at the Roy H. Johnston Arena, the Kelsey Rec has announced a wide range of programs starting soon—or already underway. At the Winton Pool, offerings include the NorMan Masters Aquatic Club, Swim for Life Swimming Lessons, and Baby Waves. Additional programs announced are Recreation Gymnastics, Acro Gym, and a Baby & Me Fitness Class.

MBCI Fall Sports Season Gets Underway

Fall sports are officially underway at MBCI School. Students interested in trying out for volleyball, girls' soccer, or cross-country are encouraged to review MBCI's Fall Sports Schedule.


Volleyball tryouts began yesterday for the senior and junior varsity boys' teams, as well as the junior varsity girls' team. The senior varsity girls, meanwhile, will begin their tryouts tonight.


Cross country and girls' soccer tryouts also kicked off yesterday.

M30Athletics Hosting 5th Annual Golf Championship on Truth and Reconciliation Day

In honour of Truth and Reconciliation Day, M30Athletics will be hosting its 5th Annual M30 Golf Championship on September 30th at the Halcrow Lake Golf and Country Club. The overall entry fee is $650, which covers almost everything except cart fees.


The championship will feature a 4-man format, with each team required to include at least one female golfer. Along with trophies and sweaters awarded to the top teams, M30Athletics is also sponsoring a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge for participants.

Blizzard Host Bombers Tonight in Preseason Home Opener

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard are set to play their first preseason home game tonight as they host the Flin Flon Bombers. The Bombers are off to a strong 2-0 start in preseason action, while Team NorMan sits at 0-2. The two clubs met earlier this week on Monday, when Flin Flon skated away with a 4-2 win over the Blizzard.

Puck drop for the Battle of Northern Manitoba is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Roy H. Johnston Arena. For fans unable to attend, our Shane’s Blizzard Broadcast will make its 2025–26 season debut tonight. The Funky Threadz Pre-Game Show kicks things off at 6:45 p.m., with Rob Hart and Mike Pichlyk bringing you the action live.

Tri-Community Minor Baseball AGM Set for Tomorrow at 7 p.m.

The Tri-Community Minor Baseball Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in the A&W boardroom. The Association is seeking feedback on this past baseball season and will also be looking for executive members, coaches, and volunteers to help with next year’s program. Kelsey Rec Calls for Registrations for Annual Parade of Programs

The Kelsey Rec is inviting all local organizations to register for their upcoming Annual Parade of Programs. The deadline to sign up is this Thursday, September 4th, with the event taking place next week on September 9th at the Roy H. Johnston Arena.

Organizations already registered should note that setup runs from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., while the Parade of Programs will be open to the public from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
