The AAA U18 Norman Northstars Play Three Games this Weekend

The Norman Northstars U18 AAA hockey squad will be on the road this weekend as they'll play three back-to-back games across southern Manitoba.

On Friday they'll go head to head against the Yellowhead Chiefs (3W-5L-0OTL-0SOW-0SOL), Saturday's game will be against the Central Plains Capitals (2W-11L-0OTL-0SOW-0SOL) and in Sundays contest the Northstars will take on the Pembina Valley Hawks (6W-5L-0OTL-0SOW-0SOL) who are one spot above them in the standings.

The Northstars are currently 8th overall in the standings with a 4W-9L-1OTL-1SOW-0SOL.

Spartan Dig 2024 Varsity Volleyball Tournament

Multiple schools from the North will be travelling down south to Brandon this weekend to compete in the Spartan Dig 2024 Varsity Volleyball Tournament. 

 

 

96 teams will participate in this year's event, making it the largest gathering in the tournament's thirty-year history.

 

 

The action starts on Friday, November 1st and runs till Saturday, November 2nd.  

 

 

Games will be played at multiple venues across Brandon and all 276 matches will be streamed on the Red River Streams YouTube channel. 

TMHA Girls Tournament Next Weekend

Next weekend will be a massive one as the Thompson Minor Hockey Association is hosting its first-ever inaugural girls' tournament.

In total, they'll have three divisions for U9, U11 and U13 teams.

It starts on November 8th and runs till the 10th, games will be played at the Thompson Regional Community Centre.

MBCI JV Volleyball Tournament Recap

The Margaret Barbour Spartans JV  Volleyball Tournament took place this past weekend and saw teams from across the North and Manitoba competing against each other.

The Swan Valley Tigers JV girls team and the Ebb and Flow School Thunderbirds JV boys team were crowned tournament champions after the weekend of play.

Both JV teams for MBCI school will be on the road once again this upcoming weekend, the JV boys will be taking part in the Hamiota Huskies JV Volleyball Tournament and the JV girls will be partaking in the Carberry JV Volleyball Tournament.

Free Multi-Sport Coaching Course at OLC Tonight and Tomorrow

There will be a free multi-sport coaching course being taught in the evening both today and tomorrow at Oscar Lathlin Collegiate.

The course is for coaches who work with Indigenous athletes and includes Aboriginal coaching modules that are NCCP-accredited.

These aboriginal coaching modules are required at the  2027 North American Indigenous Games, the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship and the 2025 Manitoba Indigenous Summer Games.

The course runs from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. today and tomorrow.

A light dinner and learning materials will be provided.

MacGregor Varsity Girls Volleyball Invitational Recap

The Oscar Lathlin Collegiate Wolverines are back home after taking part in the McGregor Varsity Girls Volleyball Invitational this past weekend. 

 

The girls placed 2nd in their pool and 4th overall after going 3-3 on the weekend. 

 

Both the varsity girls and boys volleyball teams of Oscar Lathlin Collegiate will be travelling to Snow Lake this Friday and Saturday to take part in the Jace Ryan Memorial Tournament.

Blizz Earn 3 Points against Waywayseecappo

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard earned three out of four points this past weekend against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

The Blizz got off to a hot start in the first period of Friday's game with Miguel Bouvier scoring two back-to-back goals in the first ten minutes.

Late in the first, former Blizz player now Wolverine, Griffin Ayotte, scored a shorthanded goal, making the score 2-1.

Early in the third, Griffin Ayotte scored his second goal for Wayway and sent the game to overtime.

Both teams wouldn't give an inch in the extra period which eventually led them to a shootout, Dru Mushumanski's goal was the one that ended the contest and broke a three-game losing streak for Wayway.

Saturday's game was just as competitive, the first goal came from Marlen Edwards during a power play opportunity in the second period.

Not too long after Jaxon Grosdidier and the Wolverines tied things up making it 1-1 going into the third.

Dru Mushumanski scored and gave Wayway a one-goal lead near the eight-minute mark but no more than a minute later Quincy Supprien and the power play unit chalked up a massive game-tying goal.

Shortly after Isaac Tomchak and Quincy Supprien added two more to the tally making the final score 4-2.

The Blizz play two more games here at home this Friday and Saturday against the Winkler Flyers, puck drop is 7:00 P.M. for both games.

MBCI JV Volleyball Tournament

MBCI will be hosting a plethora of schools this upcoming Friday and Saturday for their JV Girls and Boys Round-Robin Volleyball Tournament. 

The tournament will mainly feature schools from across the north and other surrounding areas.

The action starts on Friday, October 25th and ends on Saturday, October 26th.

The Wolverines Travel South this Weekend

The SV Girls' Volleyball team of Oscar Lathlin Collegiate will travel south to Westman this weekend to compete in the MacGregor Varsity Volleyball Invitational.  

The Invitational will feature eight schools from across Westman and  Southern Manitoba, the Oscar Lathlin Wolverines will be the only school representing the North.

The SV Girls are fresh off an appearance at MBCI's SV Tournament where they went 5-1 in tournament play and placed first in their pool.  

Although games haven't been set yet, according to the MHSAA website, the Wolverines' first game will be against the Portage Collegiate Saints.

MBCI Athletics Weekend Recap

The  JV and SV volleyball teams of MBCI were in tournament action this past weekend. 

 

Starting with the JV Girls and Boys, both teams travelled south to Goose Lake High School in Roblin to partake in their JV tournament. 

 

The JV girls placed third in their round robin style tournament and the JV boys placed third in their pool. 

 

Both squads will be defending home court this upcoming weekend in the MBCI JV tournament. 

 

Moving on to the SV Boys and Girls, the two teams stayed put and hosted multiple schools for their varsity tournament. 

 

It was an exceptional weekend as the SV Girls and Boys went undefeated and finished the tournament as champions.

Tough Weekend for The OCN Storm

It was a tough weekend for your OCN Storm as they went 0-2 on the road against the Norway House North Stars.

Saturday's game was all about the Stars from start to finish scoring four goals in the first, three in the second and two in the third.

The Storm were able to put three goals together late in the third but it was ultimately too late making the final score 9-3 for the Stars.

Sunday was a much better showing for the Storm, the Stars had a 7-2 lead late in the second but the Storm showed no quit as they racked up three back-to-back goals making it a 5-7 game.

Storm Captain Drew Peters got the boys one step closer with a goal early in the third but it just wasn't enough as the North Stars won 7-6.

Luckily OCN can bounce back this upcoming weekend as they travel north to NCN to take on the Flames at the Gilbert McDonald Arena.

Blizz Pick Up Two Points This Past Weekend

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard picked up two points this past weekend after playing two games on the road.

On Friday the Blizz took on the uncrowned top team in the M.J.H.L  in the Steinbach Pistons and lost 6-2.

The Blizz were very much in the game until the third period when the Pistons scored two unanswered goals, Max Collyer and Cheechoo Lathlin notched the two lone goals for the Blizz.

Saturday was a much different story and result as the Blizz defeated the Selkirk Steelers 3-2, Selkirk is currently the top team in the league having twenty-two points overall.

Sam Zagari and Keenan McNeill both scored power-play goals in the first and second periods, and it was Sam Zagari once again who put the nail in the coffin late in the third period.

The Blizz will now play four games in the next two weeks here at home, this upcoming weekend they'll take on the Waywayseecappo Wolverines and then next weekend they welcome the Winkler Flyers to town.

OCN Storm Go 1-1 Over the Weekend

The OCN Storm went 1-1 against the defending champion Peguis Juniors over the weekend to start their 2024/2025 campaign.

The Juniors were winless after three games but were able to pick up an 8-4 win against the Storm in their home opener on Saturday.

Going into the third, the Storm attempted a comeback but fell short.

Sunday's game was a way different story as the Storm thumped the Juniors 5-2, goals were scored by Cedrick Puffalt,  Keillan Holland, Maddox Dominey and Tye Burke.

The OCN  Storm are on the road for the next four games and will return home on November 2nd and 3rd for a two-game doubleheader against the Cross Lake Islanders.

Tomorrow the Storm will travel down to Norway House to play against the North Stars.

Three Road Games Down, Two More To Go

Your Northern Manitoba Blizzard played three road games over the long weekend and went 2-1.

The road trip started last week Friday at the Niverville Recreation Centre where your Blizz picked up a 1-0 win over the Nighthawks.

Keenan McNeill scored the lone goal and it was Taye Timmerman who earned the shutout by stopping all twenty-eight shots on goal.

Moving on to Saturday's game, the Blizz took on the Winnipeg Blues and lost 4-2.

The Blizz had a 2-1 lead going into the third period, but the game ultimately got away from them.

Marlen Edwards and Miguel Bouvier scored the only two goals.

The boys then capped off their three-game road trip with a 4-1 win against the Winnipeg Freeze, Miguel Bouvier had another great night scoring two goals for the Blizz.

The other two goals were scored by Cheechoo Lathlin and John Del Verne.

The Blizz will now play two more road games tonight and tomorrow against the Steinbach Pistons and Selkirk Steelers.

The OCN Storms Regular Season Starts Up Tomorrow

The OCN Storm kick off their 2024/2025 regular season tomorrow as they welcome the defending champion Peguis Juniors to town.

The Peguis Juniors are 0-2 to start the season after taking two losses to the Cross Lake Islanders this past weekend.

Puck drop is 7:30 P.M. for tomorrow's game, beforehand from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. there will be a tailgate party in the parking lot of the GLMC.

Sunday's game will start at 1:30 P.M., the Storm would also like to remind fans that all regular season games are completely free to attend this season.

Blizz go 2-1 in their Three-Game Home-stand, Now they face a Five-Game Road Trip

After Tuesday's 5-2 win against the Virden Oil Capitals and going 2-1 in their three-game home stand, the Northern Manitoba Blizzard will now embark on a five-game road trip.

First up, the boys will be taking on the Niverville Nighthawks, who are tied with the Steinbach Pistons for second place in the MGEU East Division.

The Blizz are 6-2 against the Nighthawks in the last five seasons and look to add another win to the column tonight at the Niverville Recreation Centre.

On Saturday and Sunday, they'll face the Winnipeg Blues and Winnipeg Freeze.

The two teams' combined record this season is 1W-11L-1OTL-2SOL.

Next week on the 18th and 19th the Blizz will face two of the top teams in the MJHL, the Steinbach Pistons and the Selkirk Steelers.

In the first meeting between the Blizz and the Pistons, it was Steinbach who blanked the Blizzard 4-0 and as for Selkirk, they're the only team that remains undefeated at 9-0.

The Blizz are sitting in first place in the MGEU West Division and are sporting a 6W-2L-0OTL-0SOL record. 

Blizz Weekend Recap

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard went 1-1 over the weekend as they welcomed the Steinbach Pistons and Waywayseecappo Wolverines to town.

 

Friday's game was one to forget as the Blizz lost 4-0 to the Steinbach Pistons, in Saturday's game the boys were able to bounce back big and break a two-game losing streak against the division rival Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

 

The final score on Saturday was 3-2, goals were scored by local product Isaac Tomchak, Lucas De la Salle and Marlen Edwards.

 

The Blizz cap off their three-game home stand tonight against the Virden Oil Capitals, puck drop starts at 7:00 P.M. We will be broadcasting tonight's game live on CJAR, with our pre-game show starting at around 6:45 P.M.

High School Weekend Sports Recap

Both the senior varsity girls and boys volleyball teams of MBCI travelled down to Roblin to take part in the Goose Lake High School Tournament. 

 

The SV Girls picked up a win over the Swan Valley Tigers and placed 6th overall out of ten teams.

 

The SV Boys ended up earning 3rd place in their pool, going undefeated in their set of playoff games and winning the consolation final.

 

Both squads will be heading to Swan River this weekend to compete in the Doug Oberlin Invitational. 

Northern Manitoba Blizzard Getting Recognition

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard has cracked the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings.

The Blizz are one of three MJHL squads that are being recognized as one of the top teams in the entire nation at the Junior A Level.

The Blizz came in at number sixteen, the Dauphine Kings were listed at number nine and the Selkirk Steelers made it to the top 5 being ranked the 5th best team in the country.

All three MJHL teams listed on the CJHL's Top 20 List are considered the biggest threats this season according to the MJHL's current power rankings. 

Cross Country Championship Results

The Zone 11 Cross Country Championship occurred yesterday at The Pas Ski Chalet and several MBCI students took home well-deserved hardware.

Starting with the JV Girls, Jillian Koshel and Alexandra Baker placed 2nd and 3rd.

Diana Shotton placed 1st for the Senior Varsity Girls and both the JV Girls and Boys were awarded a Zone 11 Banner for their efforts.

The 2024 Provincial Cross Country Championship will occur in Clearwater, MB next week.

High School Sports Weekend Recap

This past weekend there was a girls' high school soccer tournament in Thompson at R.D. Parker Collegiate.

The tourney started on the 27th and ran till the 28th, with six teams from across the north competing against each other.

In pool one it was the Oscar Lathlin Collegiate Wolverines who went 2-0 beating the R.D. Parker Collegiate Trojans 1-0 and Mikisew School 6-0.

The Hapnot Kopper Kweens earned first place in pool two, they first took on MBCI and blanked them 4-0 and in their second game against the Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Education Resource Centre Huskies, they put on an offensive clinic thumping them 13-0.

In the tournament finale, the Oscar Lathlin Collegiate Wolverines defeated Hapnot 2-0.

Two exhibition games happened over the weekend in high school varsity volleyball, both the MBCI girls and boys teams hosted the Hapnot Kopper Kings and Kweens.

The MBCI girls fell short against the Kopper Kweens and the MBCI boys took home the dub against the Kopper Kings.
 

The Blizzard Went 2-1 Over The Weekend

The Northern Manitoba Blizzard went 2-1 this past weekend on their first road trip in the young MJHL regular season. 

Starting with Friday's game against the Portage Terriers, early in the first period it was the Terrier's own Adler Johnston who put Portage on the board first, after that the game was all about the Blizz.

Not too long after the Blizz responded with a goal courtesy of Lucas De la Salle, he was assisted by  John Del Verne and  Tyler Bernier.

In the second and third period, the Blizz scored three goals and one empty netter making the final score 5-1.

Goals were scored by Marlen Edwards, Tyler Bernier, Kelton Kellerman and John  Del Verne.

The next day the Blizz traveled to Virden to play two back-to-back games against the Oil Capitals.

On Saturday it was Quincy Supprien who scored not once, not twice but three times for the hat trick, the final score was 3-1 for the Blizz.

Sunday was a different story as Virden beat the Blizz 3-1, regardless of the loss the Blizzard are tied with Dauphine for first place in the MGEU West Division.

The Blizz will now play the next three scheduled games here at home,  
Friday they'll take on the Steinbach Pistons, Saturday they play against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines and then on Tuesday, October 8th they'll once again do battle against the Virden Oil Capitals.
